Start Work On Computing Local Taxes The Upper Des Moines learned Sunday that computers had completed tax millage levy figures for each of Iowa's 99 counties and that they were mailed the preceding day to county auditors. It was expected county auditors and their staffs would begin work Monday (yesterday) on the figures in an attempt to compute actual property taxes to be paid by lowans during the current year. Kossuth Auditor Marc Moore had told this newspaper earlier that it will take his office about a month to finalize the figures here, then they will be given to Treasurer Don Jorgenson so taxpayers may begin paying at his office. Normally, the deadline for the first-half taxes is April 1 each year. However, taxpayers have three months from the time figures are turned over to the treasurer before the first-half payments are due - so it will probably be after July 1 before they will become due this year. Last-half payments are due without penalty prior to Oct. 1. Delay on a decision for figuring property taxes by agencies at the state capitol resulted in delays all along the line to the taxpayers. As a result, practically all of Iowa's counties will experience money problems before tax collections start pouring in and filling the coffers again. State aid funds have already been sent to many school districts in Iowa so that bills can be paid until taxes are collected in the counties and disbursed to the agencies that normally receive them. First-half checks to school districts in Kossuth from the treasurer's office are normally large and provide the funds needed to operate. CALL 295-2116 FOR BROASTED CHICKEN 90?
