Led by Interest It was his knowledge of agriculture and his vital interest in world affairs which led him to write that prize-winning editorial. He could not have anticipated the full aftermath of that editorial, hut it was an informed and honest suggestion of a feasible plan for improving relations between Russia and the United States and foi helping Russia to improve its standard of living.

Soth's knowledge of agriculture does not stem from a farm-boy background. He' was born Oct. 2. 1910, at Sibley, la and lived in a number of small towns in which his father, now dead, served as superintendent of schools. Lauren Soth's agricultural knowledge was acquired at Iowa Stale College as a student in agricultural journalism snd in agricultural economics and later'as a college employee in these fields.
