inem IIP. on ihiiu of Cupftul City lias Light SM 'lhird, neaf waiuut. p'oy of the company for several years, has been for two yew acting as Assistant Secretary. A few nionUrs ago an investigation was made in lesponse to which had been aroused, and it Is claimed that over 600 was found to be unaccounted for ou the books kept by Mr. Evans.

The. deficiency was made good by Mr. Evans' bondsmen and a compromise effected, and at that time Mr. Evans went away and was gone two He has since come back and one member of the Society laid the matter before the grand jury, and it Is reported had him indicted. The officers of the company freely denounce Evans in the most umpialilied terms, and say that his own statements in riting will convict him.

This is the Aid Society's side to the case, and Mr. Evans' case is stated by himself as follows KiWur ltajliteryiy attention having been called to to a paragraph In an evening paper ri fe to mc In terms anything hut complimentary, I hereby denounce the whole article as a tissue from hcuhiuliig to end. Not on the part of the reporter, lio probably wrote as lie was prompted by tlni President (0 of the so-called Life Insurance Company, the Western Mutual aid Society. The motive is foaud In the fact that the s'ald President, J. O.

Mahana, has an uctlon, brought by my wife, hanging over hlR head for 10,000 damages, and hopes to tarn a little temporary advantage by circulating falht reports ugidnxt a man who is ready to compare records with him or any other man In Pes Moines. Yours truly Wm. Evans, M. D. The letter was received late last evening, and Mr.

Mahana was found and asked concerning the suit referred to. His explanation Is that in compromising with Evans for the shortage, a mortgage which had been given to one of his bondsmen was transferred to the society, and Mr. Mahana was employ ed to sell the goods under the mortgage. These goods belonged to Mrs. Evati, and about was realized on them, and for this the $10,000 suit Is brought.

(). prime reiinWte of a suitable Ropitb-lican candidate for Mayor is that lie be some one who will command the votes and active support of young men. We lost many of them last fall. We should have them with us this year. Js there not some young business men of t'i or SO, competent for the place, and popular with all elements, who can be found for leader now? Don Moines Is a republican city and should wheel into line for I ho llcpubllcan column this year.

We want a Republican Mayor in Des Moines when celebrating over a Republican President next fall. Young blood would fight, and young blood would win. PKS MoIXKS OBJIX'T. Tiik school board and the teachers In the West Des Moines public schools are much opposed to the Finn hill ou school books, and have held a meeting to say so. They are opposed to Slate publication, and do not favor uniformity.

They do not antagonize public ownership of books, if each district is allowed to buy its own books. They have appointed a committee to appear before the Legislative Committee and present their views. They say that un arbitrary law would make all present evils worse, or rather bring worse ones instead, anil say that a district with g'ded schools cannor be confined as arbitrarily as one without, and must be given more latitude. The Board and the hundred school teachers are reported as an unit on this agreement. THK UOAlill OF HEALTH advises the oov-JillNOti.

Tin: Board of Health yesterday forwarded In the Governor a supplementary report on measures deemed necessary for public health. The report calls attention to the destruction of life caused by the old link and pin coupler, and recommends measures for the early adoption of the Jam coupler. It calls attention that many letters are being received at the office from citizens living near the Jowa lakes, making complaint that the sew erage deposits near the famous health resorts will soon make the region untenable. The report also calls attention to the fact that there is at present no authorized inspection of steamboats plying on these various lakes, and that in the interests of public inspection ought to be ordered and accidents such as happened on Lake Monawa prevented. Attention is also called to the fact that the powers of the Board ought to be increased so that it may be enabled to enforce its decisions with regard to public health measures.

As it now is the Board can only advise, and not enforce. Till! (1IAI1JTY INY'EIIT.
