IE OVER OVA UMUliV New Versatility Hawks. By Bert McGrane. (ReslitarMafr Writer.) MADISON, WIS. This stronghold swarmed Jwith football fans late Friday 'is Iowa and Wisconsin await ed the start of their make-or- break Big Ten opener. There was almost complete agreement that It ought to be a whale of a battle.

Clear weather and temperatures in the low 60s were in prospect. The two clubs appeared to have many things in common as they headed toward a game that has no dominant favorite. Wisconsin, operating at its home base before a sellout crowd of approximately is generally conceded a slight edge. Strong Lines. Strong lines and fast, talented backfields will represent each school and each starts with competent passers.

Each has recognized line strength from tackle to tackle, although Iowa's injury situation may affect its center position somewhat. Each team may be a little below its 1954 level at end. Each has the same experienced quarterbacking it had a year ago, the same veteran passers and the same gifted halfbacks. If Wisconsin has an edge at fullback, as it appears possible, Iowa may have an edge in line replacements. The Badgers have exceptionally strong but inexperienced halfbacks behind their seasoned starters, end their forward passing is considered second to none.

Iowa's running attack blooms as potent. Wisconsin openly admits that its first string is as strong as it was a year ago, when the Badgers finished second in the Big Ten alter losing to Iowa. Men who claim 'to' know the- Badgers have expressed a moderate concern about their defense, largely because last year's ends are gone. There is some concern over the punting, also. Each team starts the conference campaign with high hopes, although Iowa has ex- PROBABLE LINEUPS.

(Executive Spom Editor.) Iowa Teachers found some thing soft and yielding in the Drake midsection at the Sta dium Friday night, and the dis covery paid off with a 21-14 victory. The Bulldog line simnlv was unequal to the task of stop ping the Tutor rushes Clay ton Thomas alone equalling the total Drake ground offensive of 101 yards and that fact made the winning touchdown almost inevitable. It finally came with 9 minutes remaining, after the two teams went to the half-time rest tied at 14-ail and battled through a scoreless third quarter. A slick 11-yard play with fullback Dick Braunschweig hitting off left tackle for five and lateralling to right half Larry Bitcon, who went the rest of the way did the trick. Serious Threat.

The Bulldogs had just finished halting a serious Tutor threat on the 1-yard line. Darrell Huffaker punted out and Bitcon spun back 24 yards to the 19 to keep the pressure on. The same athlete picked up eight before the decisive play was called. Dowling graduate Frank So-vich wrote the finish on the victory with his third straight conversion and thereby sealed the Teachers' first triumph over a Warren Gaer-coached Drake team in five attempts. The Tutor triumph was all the more impressive in that DRAKE Continued on Page Ten.

ROBIN SO V. and it must be admitted, fat catcher had been at bat eight times in the first two contests, won by the Yankees, without getting a hit or driving in a teammate. In the second inning Friday he dropped a plate throw, permitting Bill Skowron to score a run that gave the Yankees a 2-2 tie, which was slightly less than temporary since in their half of the same frame Dodgers went in front, gradually increased their lead and made it one-sided. CAMPY, as he is affectionately called, more than, did his part in routing the American Leaguers. He hit a home run in the Inning, his first since late August, when he went into a batting slump.

This four-bagger, his third World Series competition, was a 365-footer and would have been an Yankee Stadiiim. It came after Pee Wee Reese had walked off Bob Turley, the first of three ineffective New York pitchers. One, Johnny Kucks, hurled two scoreless innings. Later Campanella made it three runs batted in when ho singled Junior Gilliam over the plate in the two-run fourth, This hit enabled Duke Snider, who had walked, to take third, whence he counted when Elston Howard caught Carl Furillo's long foul fly and then made a miserable plate throw. On his last time at bat the Dodgers' catcher led off with a crisp double, but it had no effect on the final score.

Manager Walter JT Alston of Brooklyn has found a way to stop the Yankee hitters. Karl Spooner, a left-hand-'er, looked great against them in relief in the second SITTIN' IN Continued on Page Eleven. vciEires 0F ALL SPORTS Football. fj DES MOINES. Iowa Teachers 21, Drake 14.

Fifth-ranked Chariton ran into a surprising Valley squad Friday night and managed to go nome witn only a 7-7 tie. Valley, "up" for its homecoming con-test, started fast, but played inconsistently. Near the middle of the opening quarter, half back Dave Hall. nenson DroKe loose for a 40-yard sprint. On the next play fullback Don Hall smashed over from the eight.

Hall converted. Then the Tigers were unable to stop Chariton's 50-yard drive that eaded when fullback Gary Hawk raced over from the 11. Tom Boothe kicked the tying point. Don Parker, Valley lineman, was injured in the game and rushed to Methodist Hospital. He is believed to be suffering from a recurrence of a lung condition, and was released late Friday night.

But nobody was gainsaying the choice not after the way Walt prospered Thursday with Johnny Podres, a left-hander who hadn't pitched a complete game since June 14. Podres, celebrating his twenty-third birthday, only tossed a complete game against the New York terrorists, but made the Yanks look ridiculous at times with his bewildering change of pace.
