Frauds Schultes, son of Mrs.

Elizabeth ordained into the nriesthood at Every Turn BV D. TOl'fi. The most important change ia Iowa detours during the last week has been the opening of the new paving on U. 9. 32 west of New ton, lifting a detour there which has been a source of difficulty to motorists lor some time.

However, Jasper county having determined to get out of the mud as soon as possible, the paving crews and construction gangs have merely changed their address to west of Colfax. When the work west of town has been completed, Colfax will tie connected with J)es Moines by an all concrete road. The detour at present is but three miles lone, but will have to be lengthened as construction progresses, 'through traffic Is being routed east from Des Moines on IT. S. 63 to Prairie City and straight north to Colfax; this route being all hard surfaced road except four miles south of Colfax.

Oskaloosa Paring Opened, R. H. Turny, Mahaska county engineer, in the weekly report to The Register and Tribune Tour club, states that the new paving on state road 2 east of Oska-loosa was opened to traffic ou Saturday, the present detour being abandoned. A one-half mile extension of paving on this road Inside the corporate limits of Oskaloosa will necessitate a short detour until June 10. With the exception of one-eighth mile, this detour is over paved or graveled city streets.

On June 7, two miles of new concrete will be opened to traffic on U. S. 3 between Pel la and Oskaloosa, shortening trie present detour by almost three miles on the west end. Residents of southeast Iowa now feel assured that they will drive to the state fair this fall over a completely paved or graveled road from Ottumwa. Using the new gravel road via Eddyvllle.

Monroe Road Improving. The spring thaw played havoc with the road between Prairie City and Monroe, loosening the gravel to such an extent that the road bed was left in an very rough and rutted condition. A number of complaints about this piece of road were made to the Tour club, and the matter was taken up with Engineer McMurray of Jasper county. Mr. McMurray explained that the rondit.ion was not due to negligence, as the road maintenance machinery had been broken In attempting to smooth out the deep ruli caused by heavv traffic when the frost went out.

The mutntainer lias been repaired, however, and as aoon as the surface ran he put into good shape again, the road will be re-graveled. The office of the Potato Tribune Tour club is keeping in close touch each week with thG county engineers and maintenance superintendents in every part of the state, and report, that in every case the county highway officials are ooing ail possible to keep the primary roada and all detours in rondlllon for travel. Comnicnls reaching thfl club office from motorists indicate that the detour sign is becoming more generally recognized by the public for what It really Is a sign of jirogress. MAN LESS PLANE TO CARRY SHIPS' MAIL PROPOSE That Atlantic liners carrv small airplanes that could be dispatched when approaching ports, to carrv specially urgent mail and parcels, or even passengers, Is being considered. It ia argued that the plan would save much time.

It has been demonstrated that airplanes can be launched f-om the confined decks of ships by the catapult system and can be guided without human beings on board to points thirty-five miles distant. It ia expected that this range will shortly be increased to at least 10ft miles.
