Doubtless, following the 1952 conventions, the networks thought they had gained enough experience greatly to facilitate future convention coverage. Instead, the networks face the most extensive and expensive news operation in their histories. With the conventions located in two different cities, the problem of equipment and personnel more than double.

Each convention is expected to be in session four or five days. The Democratic convention opens in Chicago Aug. 13, 1956. The next week, Aug. 20, the Republican convention starts in San Francisco.

Considering the length of the sessions, the networks will have a mere week-end to shift their operations 2,000 miles across the country. If the Democrats get into a hassle that, extends their sessions beyond a week, the networks will be forced to run split operations. For the last conventions, NBC-TV and CBS-TV each used around 300 men and two million dollars' worth of equipment. Convention coverage was expected to take a minimum of 40 hours. It actually ran 121 hours of "gavel to gavel" programming.

One continuous program lasted 15 hours, an all-time television record. According to one TV set manufacturer, in 1952 there were only 17,600,000 sets in this country. Over 40 million sets are expected to be in use by convention time next year. 'Spectaculars' NBC will televise three color "spectaculars" this month and next. The schedule: Monday, Aug.
