UP) A television appeal to help expand a Negro school in a small Mississippi community has brought an estimated $400,000 in a week. NBC announced Thursday that 66 bags of mail already processed contain $217,500 for the school of Dr. L.

C. Jones, 70, who appealed Dec. 15 on Ralph Edwards' "This Is Your Life" program. Another 64 bags mail which are not yet processed are expected to contain an additional $200,000. Edwards made an appeal for one million persons to send in $1 each.

GIRL'S LtTTER TO FIRST LADY GETS RESULTS YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO I.P A 48-word letter from a 12-year-old Campbell, Ohio, girl to the nation's first lady Thursday brought a quick response in the form of two big boxes full of Christmas presents for the girl and her six brothers. The girl, Laura Lee Fitzgerald, told Mrs. Eisenhower that her father, Willard Fitzgerald, "is off from work" and asked "if you could help us out for Christmas." She urged Mrs. Eisenhower to "write back and tell us are you going to help us or not." Instead of a letter brought by a postman, the White House sent two boxes by plane and an army lieutenant colonel delivered the parcels from the show as Bill tries to reunite a little boy with his father.

A fascinating dramatization of "The Night Before Christmas" and "The Be sure to watch It's an all-family treat presented by NORTHWESTERN BELL TELEPHONE COMPANY The Business Tide TONIGHT The Do It Yourself Shop and Milligan Lumber Company Ray Miles, president of the National Used Car Association, Thursday declared "the used car next year should be very good" with "proper vid. This gifted youngster last spring played the young Pip in this same program's two-part presentation of "Great Expectations," and did it, too, wonderfully well. (He has been in two Broadway plays, "The King of Hearts" and "The King and 1 Thi ii the third time In the last year the Montgomery program has a novel in two parts. "Great Expectations," also by Dickens was highly successful. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," a few weeks ago, was less successful.

The encouraging thing is the willingness of the program to divide these undertakings into two weeks, a simple and alto gether sensible procedure, but mighty radical for the broadcasting and telecasting business. Dickens, of course, fits beautifully into the Christmas season. He is a warm and sentimental cloak. His heroes are bright and shining. His villains are black, deep black.

And the evil crew always gets its comeuppance right and proper and with full measure in the end. Possibly It was because "Studio One" is at the moment in difficulties with some Phenix City, people who thought they saw too close a parallel between the recent Jackie Gleason play and incidents in that city. Anyway the Montgomery show went to the incredibly absurd length after "David Copperfield" of 'announcing It was a work of fiction and any similarity between it characters or anyone, living or dead, was co-Incidental, etc. For goodness sake. "David Copperfield" was written in 1849 and Dickens admitted it was more or less an autobiography.

The I entered a TV contest on the Robert Q. Lewis show, and the contest is over, I presume, and I never heard a word, not even a thank you. I believe this is a racket and something should be done about it, because the same thing happened on the Garry Moore Show. It would be nice to answer the contestants in such contests, but lack of time and personnel on such shows make it almost impossible to answer all the mail response. Please give me the address of "This Is Your Life" with Ralph Edwards.

I'd like some information about the program. Write to "This Is Your Life," NBC, Sunset and Vine, Hollywood, Cal. Al Friday's Rest Bets 5:00 a.m. Country Jamhoree m. N'ewa Wralhrr Mrrl Dirndl I'rrwnte ::) in.
