Thursday, August 30, 1990 THE DES MOINES REGISTER 3S anager's Busch says he's 'happy with baseball' IP move helps l-Gubs win By RANDY PETERSON Rtafitw Stiff Writer It's official former Iowa State athletic standout Mike Busch will pursue a career in baseball. Football? Forget it. Drafted professionally in baseball by the Los Angeles Dodgers and in football by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Busch decided to go the baseball route first. If that didn't work, the North Scott of Eldridge graduate would then contemplate switching sports. But now he doesn't think he will have to resort to his alternate plan in two months, he has a .327 batting average with 13 home runs for the Dodgers' Class A affiliate at Great Falls, Mont.

"Football won't come back into the picture unless I falter something terrible," Busch, a first baseman, said Wednesday. "I'm feel real confident with baseball. I'm happy with my situation." But there was doubt when he had only one hit in his first 19 at-bats. The line drives Busch hit off the handle of the bat as a collegian produced only broken bats as a professional. The road trips once taken by airplane were now by bus.

Four games a week turned to seven. "The adjustment period was longer than I expected," Busch said. "There CLASS OF 10WANS DRAFTED IN 1990 BATTERS 2B 3B HR RBI Avg. A change in the lineup Wednesday night before the game helped the Iowa Cubs beat Oklahoma City, 9-3. Cubs Manager Jim Essian moved Erik Pappas from eighth in the lineup to fifth. Pappas responded with a grand slam in the first inning. Chico Walker hit the first pitch for a double. Greg Smith walked on four pitches, and Derrick May hit a single to drive in Walker.

A short grounder by Lloyd McClen-don loaded the bases when a throw by catcher Chad Kreuter sailed past first base. Pappas hit his home run against pitcher Ray Hayward, who then allowed a solo home run by Brian Guinn. Hayward, one of five Oklahoma City pitchers, allowed six runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Cubs pitcher Kevin Blankenship allowed a leadoff single by Nick Capra before getting 13 consecutive outs. He left in the sixth inning after the 89ers scored three runs.

Every Cubs batter except Dave Hearron hit. Hearron replaced Rick Wrona in the ninth inning. Damon Berryhill hit a single in the seventh inning and scored on an error f' by center fielder Juan Gonzalez. Mike Busch Drafted by pro football team, loo switched to first base. The Indians drafted Costo because of his potential as a hitter.

In two months, Costo was hitting .323 with four home runs and 42 RBIs. Kinston will be in the Carolina League playoffs next week. Once the season ends, Costo will spend six weeks in the Instructional League. In February, he'll go to Cleveland's ma- jor-league camp for spring training, IOWA Walker cf Smith ss May If bl OKIA. Iowa's attendance record is 9,167 set in 1986. Iowa Cubs Small named to league's all-star team GROVE CITY, OHIO (AP) Oklahoma City's Juan Gonzalez, named rookie of the year and most valuable player in the American Association, was among four first-year players named to the league's postseason all-star team. Iowa Cubs player Jeff Small was named best second baseman. Nashville's Chris Hammond was named most valuable pitcher, and Omaha's Sal Rende was named best manager. Hammond was also named best left-handed pitcher.

Gonzalez leads the league with 29 home runs and 101 runs-batted-in. He is attempting to become the first Oklahoma City player to win both batting categories in the same season since Danny Walton In 1969. Other first-year players joining Gonzalez on the all-star team are Louisville outfielders Bernard Gilkey and Ray Lankford and Denver catcher Tim Mcintosh. Buffalo led the 11-player squad with three players first baseman Orlando Merced, designated hitter Mark Ryal and pitcher Dorn Taylor. Other players were Denver third baseman Joe Redfield and Omaha shortstop Paul Zuvella.

Zuvella was the best shortstop in the International League in 1984 and 1986 and in the Pacific Coast League in 1989. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION EASTERN DIVISION W. L. Pet. B.

"We condemn White's position and urge the commissioner to deter players from unseemly brawls, which detract from the game and threaten injury to umpires and players as well." West, who was working the plate Wednesday in the game between the Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers, had ejected Hayes in Los Angeles for an unflattering comment Hayes said about Wendelstedt after he singled and stood at first. Hayes said the comment was directed to first base coach John Vuk-ovich, while West said the comment was aimed at him.

"Let me say this," Wendelstedt said. "I went down there to separate the two and heard Von Hayes say, 'Anything I yell at Harry is between Harry and What does that say?" West refused to comment Wednesday. "Obviously things have not been settled yet," Wendelstedt said. He has been arguing for a change in the rules that would automatically suspend any player who leaves the dugout or bullpen during a brawl. White and West met Tuesday at Veterans Stadium to discuss what the umpires considered a "vicious" verbal attack on West by Phillies' management after the Hayes ejection. It didn't sound like White and West attended the same meeting. "In my meeting with Joe West yesterday, I told him that since he has been involved in a number of on-field incidents with players, he is no longer to physically touch a player," White said in his statement.

"All other umpires are to continue acting as they have in the past. "I also told Joe that I did not agree with his handling of the Von Hayes situation." This contradiction infuriated members of the umpires association. When West entered Veterans Stadium on Wednesday to find reporters again waiting for him, he said: "This is getting to be a nightly occurrence. Let me make one phone call. I'll be back in a minute." About 40 minutes later, crew chief Harry Wendelstedt came out and read a statement from the umpires association blasting White that had been dictated by their general counsel, Richie Phillips.

"This evening the Major League Umpires Association has communicated our dissatisfaction with National League President Bill White's unprecedented lack of support for the umpires to Commissioner Fay Vincent," Wendelstedt read. "We have asked the commissioner to assume jurisdiction in this matter.
