Net Very t'wmwiuwlcauvs, net wait ing, -Like ier fsometsxbasj to Tarsi I A Doses. Stsai tot er-sor Notables ConalnE- A Eegisteb reporter was ushered into Room 20, Aborn House, last evening, where he received a genial welcome from lion.

L. G. Kinne, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee. That gentleman and the Secretary of tbe Committee had been busy getting ready the return commutation tickets of the expected delegates, and on the reporter sug gesting that the pile of blanks was pretty bulky, Mr. Kinne said tbe attendance, he had positive assurance, would be tbe largest in the history of tbe party in Iowa.

Some would arrive on tbe day trains, but tbe larger share would come on the trains to-night. He said he would let the reporter "Ecoop" the Lcadet Mr. rhilpott turned pale for he had just learned that Hon. Wm. K.

Morrison, of Illinois, accompanied by Mr. H. W. Clen-deniu, would arrive by the Keokuk train to morrow morning, and would speak this even ing. The reporter said he would make tbe announcement roost gladly, and the Leader could copy it to-night.

Mr. Kinne then said that Ujd. J. Sterling Morton, of Nebraska, had also promised to come, and would un doubtedly be heard from. The conversation now became general, and in what followed it was learned that the particular Gubernatorial lightning bolt might strike any of the following: Col.

C. A. Clark, of Cedar Uapida. Mr. John W.

Henderson, of Cedar Hsplds. Mr. 3. H. Mallory, of Chariton.

Messrs. Ciiggett A Miller, of Mason City. Gen. A. C.

Dodge, of Burlington. Hon. it. J. Hall, of Burlington.

Hon. L. G. Kinne, of Tama City. Col.

W. H. Merrttt, of Das Moines. Cot. P.

G. Ballingall, of Ottumwa. Mr. W. W.

WItmer, of Dee Moines. Hjn. EJ Campbell, of Fairfield. Hon. M.

Ham, of Dubuque. Regarding the rumor that the reporter had heard, which was to the effect that one eager candidate would open a 10,000 bank account to the credit of the committee, those present declared there was nothing in It. Tbe delegation from Linn county, was stated, was coming to work for Hon. John W. Henderson.

Mr. Kinne modestly or discreetly declined to discuss his own chances, but said he doubted if there would be a nom ination on the first ballot Neither Mr. Kinne nor any of the gentle men present would make a guess on the Supreme Judgship beyond agreeing that it would probably fall to either Judge Hayes or Judge Burton. Regarding the platform, Mr. Kinne said it would be premature to guess what disposition would be made ot the liqucr question, but on the tariff issue he thought the convention would let Mr.

Fhllpott have bis own way unless tbat young man had imbibed more freshness than usual at Detroit last week. But the reporter gathers from other Democratic sources that a strenuous effort will be made to have the convention declare for a "judicious license law," whatever tbat is. In order, as one prominent Democrat said, to force the fight all along the line." The reporter then hied to the Kirk wood and sent up his card to Hon. B. J.

Hall, but a message was returned from Mrs. Hall that hor husband was used up with a sick head ache and had retired, wnich the reporter regretted, not only because that distinguished lawyer was ill, but because he therefore bad nothing lo say through The Rk-iist-lb. Tne people are) hungering for Dews about the forthcoming crops, but the State papers generally have little to say about them. The Sutherland (O'Brien county) Courier ot June 1, rays wheat tn that vicinity looks remarkably well, and corn is promising much better than it did a week ago. The Adair County Rej-orter says that quite a number of fanners between Greenfield and Creston have begun plowing their com, and where farmers were careful in selecting seed It looks well. It also says that small grain never looked better at this season of the year. The Manning (Carroll County) Mont-tor says oats, rye and grass are all in fair condition, and about two-thirds of the acreage of corn planted promises well.

The trouble in that vicinity haa been poor seed and bad weather. A correspondent at Cory don, Wayne county, writing nnder date of May 30, says farmers were not yet done planting coin, and a considerable amount of what was plan ted did not come up and will have to be replanted. Oats and grass are looking well. But little wheat is raised in that county, corn beirg the main dependence, TheUedrick (Wapello county) ErUerinine cheeringly says that small grain and grass could not look mora promising than they do at the present time, and the corn ditto, and it is growing rapidly. Wheat, oats and grass throughout the State promise fully an average crop, while cora is better, in proportion to the advantages of latitudo, in the northern part of tbe State than In the southern part DISPOSED WITH.

A running Gambler Adepts a Shrews) and -Economical Flaw of Doing 1th-ent a Lawyer. Doc Jones, the well-known gambler, hat ing been indicted by the grand jury, created something of a surprise yesterday by promenading Into the District Court room at the Court House without a lawyer and nolltnlv iniiuuing for the court attorney. To that functionary cf Justice the indicted "tiget" communicated the fact of his situation, and remarked that he acknowledged the corn, but he bad no money to squander for an attorney and he wanted to plead guilty to the charge and be fined. District Attorney Wilkinson introduced the novel defendant to the Judge and explained the state of affairs. Judge McHenry peered over his spectacles at the heio of the situation and measured the non- defensive suitor for Justice and mercy In sheer surprise.

It was a refreshing Instance- but there was only one course open to the astonished Court He fined the gambler S50 and costs, which were promptly paid, and Jonei sallied forth, doubtless snickering In his sleeves at the other "tiger" keepers who employed expensive leeal representation. Etc. A GOOD 8TAKT- Ths heavy rain last night cut tbe attend ance at the court house down to small numbers, but those present showed a thoroughly in earnest spirit and were zealously desirous maturing the very best plan to properly memorialiie the soldiers of Folk county. Abnut fifty were present Including three ladies. A preliminary organization was effected by electing CoL W. H.

Merritt, chairman. On taking tbe chair. Col. Merritt made a short speech in endorsement of the object of tbe meeting. Capt F.J.

Cressey was elected Secretary. Mr.Geonre C. Baker stated that the meet ing had orielnated in the conversation of some soldiers on Decoration Day, who had proposed the organization of a society to raise some Sl.OOO and erect a monument The movement had since gained force ander gen era! approval, and there now seemed to be a prevailing desire to erect a building which would be a much more fitting and lasting memorial. He therefore moved to appoint a committee on permanent organization, and let them at once proceed to business. The motion prevailed, and Gen.

Given, George C. Baker, Captain Carey, W. U. Sal I aria and eorge W. Brbtow were appointed said com mittee.

Gen. Given made a few remarks, stating that the field was a grand one that was cor dially endorsed by all soldiers and their friends, bat that the committee would like some light on the general plan to be pur sued. Capt. Carey favored the erection of a monu ment at the cemetery, and detailed his plan for a monument so arranged that the names all d-ceased soldiers could be eut the marble or etoue bases. He would raise the necessary funds by selling certifi cates to soldiers and their friends.

The movement might be made State affair, and he thought the people ot Iowa would be just as willing to contribute and just as proud of fine monument in this city as they now are of the Capitol. The money could be raised much more readily by the certificate plan than in any other way. S. B. Keller favored the State plan, and thought that the necessary funds could be easily raised by appointing some trustworthy person In eacb school district.

Geo. C. Baker read an article from Har- Pr' Weekly, of June 2. describing the memorial building in Rutland, Tt, which has been recently erected at a cost of $50,000. This building is of granite, with marble Moors.

Tbe granite and marble were donated by the quarries of that State, and the building is one of the finest ot its kind in the United States. Mr. Baker favored the erection of a memorial building. The expense would of course be greater than for a monu ment, but it could be utilized as a place of meeting by the G. A.

K. Posts and all sol diers organizations, which could hold their regular meetings in the hall by arranging nights of meeting that would not conflict Such a building could be made ooe of the most attractive in the city. Capt Cressey favored' the building plan aud thought that the State Arsenal could soon be obtained at a nominal price, as tbe Adjutant General's oflice and army stores would soon be removed to the capitol. Tbe arsenal could be properly reconstructed and made a place of meeting for all soldier or- gauizaiions and a home for all soldiers v. ho may visit the city.

Another story could be erected on the arsenal, which would make the accommodation ample for all soldier gatherings and mementoes, making it a soldiers' home in all respects. The Committee on Permanent Organization reported by resolution as follows: Kesultwt, That we are in favor of tbe Immnli- te incorporation of an association to be known as tbe Soldiers and Sailors' Monumental Assocl-tlon. tbe object being to provide a suitable and enduring monument to tbe memory of tbe Bouiters auu sailors ox toe Liuion Army and That a committee of seven be sp-rxiinlid todraft and report articles of tnenrnora- tion to an adjourned meeting to be held at tbe court room on Gen. Given stated that the committee found the subject too vast for the few minutes consideration they had given it, but they were all anxious that some plan should be matured at the earliest possible time. The resolution as adopted, and the chair appointed Gen.

iven, J. G. Hounds, Capt P. V. Carey, Capt F.

J. Cressey, and Gen. J. M. Tuttle, as committee on articles of incorporation.

The following were appointed a committee to arrange for the next meeting: Jesse Cheek, T. B. Kobinson, George C. Baker, S. M.

Dunlapand A. H. Botkin. Adjourned to meet at the Court House next Monday evening at 7 :30. Capital Lodge, No.
