I lANSr.VTllr.KKGIKTKR Lisbon's Kristin Fairiey, center, and Crystal Mod, right, relish their title. Second-ranked Lisbon beat No. 1 Woodward-Granger, 4-1.

Lisbon repeats in 1-A, tips Woodward-Granger Kruse scored on the play. Lee's hit seemed to stir her team's, offense. Lee, who previously had two singles in the tournament, said she was hitting home runs in practice. She was waiting for an opportunity to hit with power when it counted. "I just felt comfortable and hit the ball," Lee said.

"I figured I was due for a hit." Lisbon added three more runs in the sixth inning. Samantha Light reached third base on a throwing error by Bice. Light scored on Kristin Fairley's single. Fairiey later scored on a bunt by Stamp. Stamp was out in a rundown on the play, but Stacy Light singled, advanced on an error and scored on Jennifer Frey's single.

Woodward-Granger's only run came in the sixth inning. Kim Cullen reached second base on an error and scored on consecutive groundouts. Aschere O'Dell pitched a three-hit shutout, turning the tables on top-ranked Charles City's two tournament victories and leading lOth-ranked Ottumwa to a 1-0 victory in the state Class 3-A softball final Friday. "I didn't watch (Charles City) play," O'Dell said.

"Coach (Frank Huston) scouts the other team. I told him I didn't want to know what they hit and where to pitch. "The reason I pitched so well was because it was my last game and my last season. This is what I've been looking for for five years." It was the second title for Ottumwa (42-7), which also won in 1976. For Charles City, the final was its fourth.

In 11 tournament appearances, Charles City has never won a state title, finishing second in 1982, 1985 and 1988. "It was the kind of game we played all through the tournament," Charles City Coach Jerry Newton said. "We won two of them and this one turned out the other way." Charles City (40-4) beat sixth-ranked Sioux City North, 1-0, and eighth-ranked Linn-Mar of Marion, 1-0, in its first two games. "We just didn't handle their pitcher," Newton said. O'Dell retired the first 13 batters, until Laura Elfers singled with one out.

She finished with nine strikeouts and walked none. "That was the real Aschere O'Dell you saw tonight," Huston said. "She saved her best for tonight." Charles City hadn't allowed a run in its first two games. But Ottumwa ended the scoreless inning streak at 18 innings when it scored its only run in the fifth inning. Tia Trytten led off the fifth inning with a single and took second base on Holly Hoover's sacrifice bunt.

After Kim Krambeck pinch ran for Trytten, Angie Coker doubled to center field to score Krambeck. Coker said she was surprised she got a good pitch to hit. "I knew Kim was on second," she said. At the start of the season, Paige Stamp said she wouldn't have believed her team could win another state title. Fortunately for Lisbon, she was mistaken. Second-ranked Lisbon beat top-ranked Woodward-Granger, 4-1, Friday at Harlan Rogers Park to repeat as the state Class 1 -A champion. Lisbon became the first school to repeat since Ankeny won titles in 1978, 1979 and 1980. "A lot of teams do it once, but very few do it back-to-back," said Stamp, who was named captain of the Class 1-A all-tournament team.

Last season, Lisbon beat East Marshall of LeGrand, 7-0, for the championship. The first few innings of the game were played in a light rain. Then the sun came out and the field warmed up. So did Lisbon's bats. The game was anticipated as a pitching duel.

Stamp is a junior who finished the season with 459 strikeouts. Woodward-Granger pitcher Jen Bice is an eighth-grader who had thrown shutouts in her team's two previous tournament games. Bice retired the first 13 batters she faced before Cathy Lee tripled in the fifth inning. With two outs, Angie Clark hit a ground ball to shortstop Jessica Coenen that was bobbled for an error. Pinch runner Brianna lost to Clarke of Osceola, 1-0, Friday Sports Iowa Scene Menace advance to finale Josh Bahr scored a goal with 1 minute expired in overtime to give the Des Moines Menace amateur soccer team a 3-2 victory over the Austin Lone Stars.

That set up an all-Iowa championship game today in the United Systems of Independent Soccer League's Premier Central Regional Tournament. The Sioux City Breeze defeated the Oklahoma City Slickers, 7-0, in the other semifinal Friday night at Hoover High School. The Menace led, 2-1, until Austin's Darin Talley scored with 22 seconds remaining to force overtime. At 1 minute into the overtime, Chad Crandall kicked the ball in from the corner of the field, and passed it to Venti Stoimirov. Stoimi rov maneuvered around a defender and passed the ball to Bahr, who kicked it into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper to end the game.

"I just knew to put it on goal. Luck was with me," Bahr said. "We get a little luck in some of these games, and I guess luck was on our side tonight. We played hard as a team. It was a team effort, we worked hard together and played pretty well.

We never gave up. Aaron Leventhal scored the first goal at 8:24, off a pass from Tony Jones. Leventhal dribbled the ball toward the goal, stopped, moved to set up his shot, and delicately passed it to the right of the keeper. Matt Presley of Austin tied the score, 1-1, when he beat Menace goalkeeper Casey Mann 24:10 into the game. Vinnie Darnell scored 4:51 into the second half off a pass from Brian Hann.

Darnell kicked the ball into the upper right corner of the goal, past Lone Star goalkeeper Micah Grossman, The Menace, seeded third in the tournament, will face their in-state rival, top-seeded Sioux City, today at 8 p.m. in the championship game. The Menace split two games with Sioux City, losing in the season opener, 5-1, and winning at home, 3-1. Sioux City, led by three goals each from Brian Adams and Richard Markham, beat Oklahoma City, 7-0. Markham kicked off the scoring 1 9 seconds into the game.

"We had real good practices this week," Markham said. "We basically focused all week to get the No. 1 seed. We'd rather play Des Moines than Austin. It wouldn't be an easier game, but we've already played them, and we know what we're going up against." Tickets are $12 for adults, and $6 for children 19 and under.

Jacqueline Day Auto Racing Big day for Penske, Petty Richard Petty is the winningest driver in NASCAR Winston Cup history, so how come he is constantly turned away from Victory Lane as a car owner? Roger Penske is the most successful car owner in American racing, so how come his star-studded team couldn't qualify for the Indianapolis 500? Today, they both get a chance to answer questions. Petty's No. 43 Pontiac, with Bobby Hamilton behind the wheel, will start from the outside of the first row in the second Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jeff Gordon, who won last year's inaugural race, took the pole position Thursday in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Friday's scheduled qualifying was rained out.

Recent success hasn't been a problem for Penske, but most people con tinue to focus on his most embarrassing moment when his Indy-car duo of Al Unser Jr. and Emerson Fittipal-dL both two-time 500 winners, failed to qualify for the Indy race.
