NATO Friends Joint Services Slated For Call Viet War 'Absurd' PARIS IUPI) Secretary of State Dean Rusk today tried to convince French government leaders that U. S. involvement in the Viet Nam war is critical in the free world's fight against communism. Rusk, who arrived Sunday night to attend the two-day North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Council of Minis meeting opening Tuesday, had a difficult task.

Most of the European allies agree with French President Charles de Gaulle that the United States is engaged in an "absurd" war in Southeast Asia. Only Western solidarity against a possible Russian threat to Europe requires payment of lip service to American objectives elsewhere. Rusk was not meeting with de Gaulle, now involved in campaign ing for Sunday's run-off presidential election against leftist Francois Mitterand. He had appointments instead with Premier Georges Pompidou and Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville, who will report to de Gaulle later. The growing impression in Europe, even among the most staunch U.

S. allies, is that the United States' is heading for a military showdown with the Communists which they are not certain should occur. Although he did not say so, usk was expected to ask the 14 NATO partners to step up non-military aid for South Viet Nam. But the NATO meeting was not expected to result in any decision about the two major issues facing the alliance. These are: Dr.
