(Spons Editor, Tha Register.) AMES, IA. John Eareckson of the Baltimore, Y.M.C.A., is the real veteran of the National A.A.U. wrestling tournament be ing held here. He is 42 years old and Is competing In his twenty- fifth national meet, including the Olympic tryouts in 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932 and 1936. He began wrestling In 1920 and ever since that time has competed In the 134-pound division, winning the South Atlantic A.A.U, title 18 times and the national championship once in 1929.

This season he won bouts In 16 dual meets. Eareckson not only attends every national meet but always brings several boys with him. This year he and five others drove here from Baltimore in an open truck and, although they encountered bad weather most of the way, completed the trip in 27 hours. "I guess I'll wrestle forever," he said Friday. "1 simply love it.

hen I get so I can't make the first team I suppose I'll continue wrestling on the second." Officials of the tournament are taking up a collection for a present which will be given to the veteran tonight in honor of his contribution to amateur wrestling. TJiis is the third time Iowa State has been host to National A.A.U." meets. National titles were decided here in 1911 and again in 19Si. Four mats were in use during the afternoon session. Mat No.

Five metropolitan champions representing the Westside Y.M.C.A of New York, N. are in the competition. They are Lawrence Cowell, who Is a federal food in spector and who has been a runnerup twice in the National Y.M.C.A. meet; Henry Wittenberg, who is doing research work on physical energy as he works for his doctor's degree at the City College of New York; Emmanuel Maier, also studying for a-doctor's degree at the same college; Elliot Small, a graduate of Lehigh uni versity, and George Meyer, who owns a beauty parlor in New York, Two of the referees, Allie Morrison, formerly of Marshall-town, who now coaches at Omaha, Central high, and Maynard Harmon, former Iowa State Teachers college wrestler, now coaching at New Hampton, are former Olympic matmen.

wrestling committee, is a judge at High Toint, N. C. Although the rules call for 15-mlnute bouts, coaches agreed the long contests were too long for the good of the boys and decided on 10-minute bouts, with the proviso that any boys who objected could insist on the longer contest. Out of the 100 entries only four objected to the shorter distance. The coaches also agreed to recommend that the rules be amended so that bouts will be only 10 minutes In length.

They also suggested that a new weight classification of 165 pounds be added. At present there Is a jump from 158 to 174 pounds, One of the best of the early matches saw Earl Van Bebber of the Oklahoma Aggies lose a decision to Walter Jacob of the Ithaca, N. Y.M.C.A.
