"Any resource you have to try to help Jewel through what he's been through is important," offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe said. "And Albert Young has already reached out and helped him a little bit. "He's been through that.

He understands it, and look where he is right now." Young, a highly touted recruit from Moorestown, N.J., hit his stride as a red-shirt sophomore in 2005, running for 1,334 yards and eight touchdowns. "Of course, you're going to have those doubts when (an injury) initially happens," Young said. "But we had a bunch of guys hurt (in '04). We kind of had our own little group of guys who were going through the same thing." Hampton will attempt to recover for next season. "It's tough when you're going through that kind of stuff to see if anything is out there in front of you," O'Keefe said.

Young has three carries for the Vikings this season, netting 2 yards, and two receptions for 1 1 yards. Dan Johnson Today's Iowa College Games reached the summit at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The next day, they went to the Royal Gorge on the Arkansas River to do 10 miles of Whitewater rafting. Then they drove back to Des Moines and got back at 4 a.m.

Monday. But the focus was on the Pikes Peak climb. "The first five miles were pretty easy, we were having a good time," Mosier said. "When we started getting into the true mountain, it started getting difficult. The air started to get thinner and you could feel your head throbbing." At one point, Taylor and Mosier walked to the edge.

They were above clouds and couldn't see the ground, so they dropped a rock down and listened. "It took a good 20 seconds before we heard a splash, so there was water down there," Mosier said. The higher they climbed, the harder it was. "About halfway through it, that's when you're thinking, 'Was this the right idea? This is pretty Platek said. "But especially once we got to the top, we were all so happy that we did it.

"You're walking uphill the whole time. The temperature was hot at the bottom, then it got colder as you climb. Your legs get tired and start to cramp up.

"But just the reward of finishing and that feeling when you get to the top, that was definitely worth it." The hike is becoming a tradition at Drake. The 2009 seniors did it as well. It stems from coach Chris Creighton talking about his experiences as a mountain climber, which date to 1987. Growing up in the Northwest, Creighton climbed Mount Rainier, Mount Hood and Kings Peak. He and his wife, Heather, climbed Mount Katahdin in Maine in 2009.

When Creighton coached in the NAIA, he would take his seniors on mountain-climbing trips. He can't do that in the NCAA, but he can encourage his seniors to organize a trip and do it on their own. "You're doing something that maybe you didn't think you could do," Creighton said. "I just think you grow as a person in those situations. Pretty much every time I've been on a mountain, you get to that point where you don't want to go anymore and you don't know if you can do it.

Whoever you're doing it with, there's just a bond that's hard to describe." The entire trip was packed into three days. The players left Des Moines at 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, arrived at 8 p.m., and camped near the mountain. They started climbing at 4:15 a.m.

and Panthers UNI is scoring on less than half of its trips inside opponents' 20. By ROB GRAY robgraydmreg.com Big plays abound. Touchdowns don't. So Northern Iowa's football team enters today's 2 p.m. road game at Missouri Valley Football Conference rival Southern Illinois as a glowing ember in search of end zone ignition.

The Panthers, ranked No. 15 in the Football Championship Subdivision, stand 18th nationally in yards per game at 404.5, but plummet to 104th in terms of scoring average, at 15 points. "We're taking baby steps," Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley said in this week's Valley teleconference. Especially between the 20-yard lines. The Panthers have eked out three touchdowns and four field goals in 1 6 trips to the red zone this season.

They've escaped the it's like, 'I can conquer anything. I just climbed a It gives you that feeling of 'I can take on the If someone started falling behind, the group would take a break and begin again with the most tired at the front, so they would not fall behind. Once they finished, the players said there wasn't a huge celebration, more of a feeling of relief. "It wasn't like the end of a big football game where you're exploding with emotion," Asbell said. "We were so tired.

A couple guys hugged and we felt a deep sense of satisfaction, but it wasn't a real rah-rah moment. "We ended up finding a table and crashing on it for about 40 minutes." Platek said the seniors hope to get together within a couple of years after graduation and do it again. In August, it was a chance for the six to bond and talk about the future. "We spent the last Axk years together, and six more weeks and it's done," Morrison said. "It's like a last hurrah.

How many times in your life will you be able to do that kind of a trip with six or seven of your best friends?" for points Tirrell Rennie and Zach Davis at quarterback depending on the situation. Southern Illinois (2-3, 1-1) also shuffles play callers Chris Dieker and Paul Mcintosh. Turnovers -and a lack of them could be of paramount importance. The Panthers (2-2, 2-0) are minus-five in turnover margin. The Salukis are plus-two.

"To have the opportunity to win, you're going to have to be error-free," Farley said.
