Upper Dei Maine* Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1967 ^___^_^_ J ^^_—••••^•••.^^^•^•^••^^•••^^••••^ Assumes Extension Post Ruth Patterson, Kossuth Extension assistant, has assumed her duties in working with the 4-H clubs and other youth in the county, Galen DeValois, county Extension director, announced this week. She started work Monday, Dec. 4, after a month of training in Extension offices in Adair, Madison, Jones and Cedar counties. The week of Nov. 27-Dec. 1 was spent on the campus of Iowa State University, Ames, attending a seminar in Youth Development held for all Extension staff members in the state. Mrs. Patterson is a graduate of ISU witli a bachelor of science degree in sociology. She is married to Russell Patterson, who farms in the Burt area, and has four children, Clint, 18, Kathleen, 10, Cynthia, 14, and Sharon, 12. During the 15 years that she and her husband Russell have lived in the Burt area she lias been active in many community activities, many of which have been centered around young people. She is now looking forward to a chance to help them on a broader scale through the 4-H program. In addition to DeValois and Mrs. Patterson, Kossutli has the services of Margaret Pratt, Extension home economist, who serves Kossuth and Palo Alto counties. Hog Raisers To Aid In Helping Promote Pork The Kossuth County Swine Producers met last Wednesday evening at the Extension Service building in Algona and announced plans to participate in a nationwide program to increase profits for hog raisers. President Dick Kuecker explained to nearly 25 club members that all participants in the "Nickels For Profit" program will forward 5? from the sale of each hog to the National Pork Producers Council. The total amount received by the council will be spent to upgrade the public image of pork through better inspection and quality control. All hog buying stations are being contacted by the producers and will be asked to aid in the bookkeeping required. Kuecker explained that the program was entirely voluntary, but asked for support from all hog raisers in the county. The program officially goes into effect Jan. 1, 1968. Twentythree swine producing states have organized in the nationwide move. Further information can be obtained from any member of the Kossuth County Swine Producers. Rites Monday For Former Algona Resident Funeral services for Mrs. Richard "Muggs" Hughes, 47, who died Friday morning, Dec. 8, were held Monday, Dec. 11 at 3:30 p. m. at the Congregational church in Clear Lake. Rev. Arthur Krebs officiated. Burial was in the Clear Lake cemetery. Hester Margaret Hedrick was born in Humboldt county on Dec. 15, 1919, daughter of Sam and Helen Hedrick. She was married to Richard R. Hughes, Dec. 10, 1946, at Sioux Falls, S. D. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Marion, Mrs. Dale McConathy, Des Moines; two sons, Larry, Waterloo, and Dennis, Algona; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Johnston; two sisters, Peggy Pilcher and her twin, Esther Forsberg; and one brother, Howard Hedrick, all of Algona. Realtors Elect Kyle Keith Kyle Keith of Algona was named president of the Kossuth County Real Estate Board at a dinner and business meeting of the group held last Wednesday night at Van's Cafe. Leon Laird was named vice president, and Oliver Carlson, secretary-treasurer. Firemen Elect Ted Wagner was elected chief of the Whittemore fire department at a recent meeting of the firemen. Ralph Koppen was named assistant chief and Eldon Maahs, secretary, and Jerry Bormann, treasurer. Gulf Grand Opening Floyd Weishaar will hold a three-day Grand Opening of Floyd's Gulf Service station, Dec. 15-17, on South Phillips St. The station has been remodeled and Gulf products will replace the former Superior line.
