Dating from 1915, the college football selections issued by NEA are the oldest of any major news organization.

A. Burr masked a lot of tragedy in his life. He was married three times Annette, his first wife, was killed in a plane crash; Isabelle, his second, divorced him; Laura, his third, died of cancer. And his only child, Michael, died of leukemia when he was only 10. Q.

I was very unhappy to learn that Raymond Burr had passed away. He has always been one of my favorite actors. But I know nothing about his personal life. Was he married? Did he have children? R.TA, Canton, Ohio (815) 758-6233 2425 Bethany Road, Sycamore (708) 208-8210 PORTRAITS BACK IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS I By Howard Siner NEW YORK (NEA) What's become the most dangerous attack in college football originally was designed to get the most out of just one player. He is some player, of course.

Charlie Ward, a cool leader with all the right moves, calls the signals for Florida State in a "fast-break" offense that bears his trademark. For his unique success, Ward, a senior quarterback, has been named by Newspaper Enterprise Association to head its 1993 All-America college football team. The announcement of the squad was syndicated by NEA to more than 600 daily newspapers throughout the United States. "To me, Charlie is like a vapor," says FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. "Just when you think you see him, and can reach out and grab him, he's gone." Ward, who is 6 foot-2 and weighs 190 pounds, is a Randall Cunningham-type star whose excellent arm is overlooked because of his scrambling.

He has the poise and intelligence needed for making the right choices on the field. In just his first nine games this season, Ward zoomed to over 2,500 yards in total offense as he guided the nation's top-ranked team. By that point, he was averaging nearly 8 yards every time he passed or ran the ball. Furthermore, Ward is at his best in big games. Last season, he was the Orange Bowl MVP.

On. Nov. 13, he almost led Florida State back from a 24-7 deficit to win at Notre Dame. That brought calls for a bowl-game rematch. Dating from 1915, the annual All-America college football selections made by NEA are the oldest of any major news organization.

Here is the 1993 All-America team chosen by an NEA panel: OFFENSE Quarterback: CHARLIE WARD, Florida State, senior. Running back: TYRONE WHEATLEY, Michigan, junior. Running back: MARSHALL FAULK, San Diego State, junior. Wide receiver: J.J. STOKES, UCLA, junior.

Wide receiver: RYAN YARBOROUGH, Wyoming, senior. Tight end: MARK BRUENER, Washington, junior. Lineman: AARON TAYLOR, Notre Dame, senior. Lineman: BERNARD WILLIAMS, Georgia, senior. Lineman: WAYNE GANDY, Auburn, senior.

Lineman. MARK DIXON, Virginia, senior. Center: JIM PYNE, Virginia Tech, senior. Place-kicker: TOMMY THOMP SON, Oregon, senior. Kick returner: DAVID PALMER, Alabama, junior.

Because foes have keyed to stop the run this season, San Diego State has used Faulk more often than before as a receiver out of the backfield. Still, he made the All-America team by rushing for over 1,300 yards and 17 TDs. Waldrop, who is regularly double-teamed, dominates one of the nation's best defenses. According to Stanford coach Bill Walsh: "Rob Waldrop is the best defensive lineman in America.

Period." The best linebacker in the country is Thierry of Alcorn State, a Division I-AA team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. He certainly hasn't gone unnoticed by the experts. Notre Dame, which took over from Florida State as the nation's top-ranked team, placed three men on the NEA All-America squad: offensive lineman Aaron Taylor, along with defensive backs Bobby Taylor and Burris. Ward was joined on NEA's team by an FSU teammate, Brooks, a linebacker. The hottest competition for All-America berths was at wide receiver.

Stokes of UCLA and Yarborough of Wyoming lead a fine crop of pass catchers in college football this season.
