from a shutout In the StuyvSSant handicap Saturday when he scored a thrilling photo finish victory in the revival of the six-furlong stake at Jamaica Clashing with 11 other three-year olds seven of which also are eligible for either the Derby or Preakness the Whitney colt chalked up his second straight victory of the year by the narrow margin of a head over Vamoose a 40-to-l shot maiden representing the Falaise stable A scant half-length farther back came the tiring Guy Fawkes In the silks of A Norris Neither Vamoose nor Guy Fawkes is eligible for the rich stakes Marshall Charing Cross a derby hopeful making his 1937 debut a 9-to-2 favorite in the open betting affair to win the purse of 34425 finished ninth Guy Fawkes Alfred Airflame and Gold Band from the Bomar ran themselves out in vying for the eariy lead while Eddie Arcaro did a fine job of rating Chicolorado held at 5 to 1 to the final quarter formance for an easy win in the fur long Other record breakers were: Con-der 880-yard freshman relay team 1:319 Most of the crowd stayed to the finish which found medley relays vieing in interest with the final event of the all-around championship which already had been clinched by Whitman Events were not far -behind schedule and there was no cessation of rapid-fire action at any time during the day Crowd Stays There was great rlvalrly for victories in the relay events In class Provo quarter-mllers romped off with the mile event finishing well in front of South Cache the second place aggregation Ogden won a close 880-yard affair with North Cache close behind and then came through with a win in the medley relay which had so many teams entered that two separate races were necessary South Cache running first in the other Take Relays In class Pleasant Grove had no difficulty in the mile relay and Winnemucca led all the way in the 880 American Fork turned the trick In the medley final event of the program Idaho Southern was all alone in Its 880 relay and won the mile combination event handily with Albion second While won both relays in the freshmen division the mile affair proved the most Interesting of the lot The first two Cougar Kittens trailed Aggie youngsters but Gardner running third made up almost 10 yards on his man and Ben Taylor Immediately galloped to a clear cut victory The 880-yard run was popular among the prep athletes two separate races being necessary In each class The fastest time in these four was chalked up by Nelson of South Cache but Jenkins of Roosevelt won the sympathy and admiration of the crowd for his game perform ance in the first class race Running his first lap with extraordinary speed Jenkins apparently mis' judged his pace and weakened badly' near the close collapsing as he stumbled over the line Greenrlver 220-yard dash :229 Farr a blooming Welsh- 4 man and Maurice Strickland a blinking Anzac I hear It whispered that the British government has been nursing these two upright spal- peens in secret for some time now and has suddenly sprung them on a skeptical world in honor of the coronation of his majesty George the Six (count six) -A Also it may be that parliament wanted to impress and intimidate Mussolini The duce honest fellow is bound to be impressed when he peers across the channel through his spyglass and sees two British prizefighters walking erect on their -hind legs like men The duce has only one heavyweight fighter himself Prlmo Camera and Primo Is very horizontal The Italians were thinking at one time of sending Prlmo down to Ethiopia to crack the walls of Addis Ababa single-handed but Prlmo demurred and they shipped i him back to the American front instead That was a mistake It called attention to the fact that England had two vertical fighters and Italy only one and he a swooner already heard of the case of Thomas Farr the chap who went around Max Baer in par' the other day sinking his tee shots in mouth and combing whiskers with a random mashie Farr is now the champion of the empire if he cares to admit it He will probably fight Strickland the Anzac some time In June In fur- ther honor of the crowning of George VI This Strickland Is a fellow you may not have heard much about He looks pretty good treas- onous I know but the Orsetrylians have always had a bit of an edge on the mother country in the matter of fighters There was Ruby Robert Fitzsimmons for instance I and Thomas Heeney the hard pebble from down under As a matter of fact I am being slightly inaccurate Strickland is a New Zelander Those down under spots look pretty much alike from up over Mr Strickland is not what you would call an eye-filling figment of homo sapiens He is bumpy and awkward and frail with the general conformation of a pod of peas He has slender arms and a discouraged expression You would think that one punch to the lumbar region would knock him very cold and you would think a consumptive horsefly could take Mr punches without flinching But the fact Is Strickland can fight At least he can box He has a good straight left and pretty fair right and a world of elusiveness This week he made one of our leading white hopes look silly which is a blow to American fisticuffs and' a boost for buy British Pleasant Grove (V Walker Walker Armistead Nielson) emy defeated Dale Barnett Spainsh Fork 6-2 6-4jPul Harmon high de Salina Gunnison North Emery
