Born in New York City, Peck received his bachelor's degree from Harvard College in 1958 and his doctorate from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1963. He from work at midnight, he would fire it up and drive up and down the streets. The police would likely show up the next day because of complaints about the noise, Barrett said. While most parents might cringe at the mention of the word motorcycle, Mr.

Vaughn loved them as much as he did karts, his daughter said. "Us kids grew up on motorcycles and go-karts. We had our own go-kart track in our backyard," she said. Once when Barrett was involved in a motorcycle accident, her father insisted she get on the back of his motorcycle the next day to ensure she wouldn't become afraid of riding them. The Hope For Healing Human Evil," "Meditations From the Road," and "Further Along the Road Less Traveled." Peck received the 1984 Kaleidscope Award for Peacemaking, the 1994 Temple International Peace Prize and the Learning, Faith and Freedom Medal from Georgetown University in 1996. He became one of the best-known psychiatrists and spiritual teachers of his generation, though some in his field frowned on his meshing of mental health and spirituality. Raised in a secular home, Peck's religious track ranged from Zen Buddhist (at 18) to a flirtation with Jewish and Muslim mysticism (in his 30s) and Christianity (at 43). He said he was repulsed and pleased by some of the cult aspects that formed around him. "Half the time when people want to touch my robe," he once told Life magazine, "it feels incredibly icky yuck!" The rest of the time, "it feels very good, honest, right." He described himself as a flawed man with a weakness for cheap gin, marijuana and women and wrote openly of his extramarital affairs in "In Search of Stones" (1995).

Peck (in undated photo) Eventually, his shop was successful enough that he dropped his factory job. People came from several counties around, said his wife. "He was a guy who didn't need to advertise. Word of mouth kept him covered up with work all the time." "He was your classic Type A personality," said Barrett. "He had a very strong work ethic." Somewhere along the line, he developed a keen interest in racing.

Mr. Vaughn took up kart racing and even helped out in the pits for several teams. He never did get over his interest in karts, though. He once had a kart with an airplane engine and after getting home served in the Army from 1963 to 1972. Peck spent more than 10 years in the private practice of psychiatry and had "The Road Less Traveled," his first book, published in 1978..

The self-help book, which begins, "Life is difficult," has sold more than 6 million copies in North America and has been translated into 20 languages. His other books include "People of the Lie: a The Washington Post contributed to this obituary. Obituaries His knack By Rob Schneider rob.schneiderC3indystaf.com Max Vaughn grew up on a farm, but his destiny didn't have a thing to do with corn or soybeans. Instead, it revolved around the sweet purring of engines. "I think he had oil in his veins instead of blood," said his wife, Barbara Vaughn.

Mr. Vaughn, 71, Fort- ville, had a gift, she explained. "He had a God-given gift for small motors," she explained. "He could listen to an engine and tell you what was wrong with it," said his daughter, Kathy Barrett. Mr.

Vaughn, who died Sept. 23, didn't just work on engines, his life revolved around them. He opened the Repair Shop in 1958 and worked days there until it was time to punch in at his second-shift factory job at places like Delco Remy in Anderson and International Harvester. He would work at his shop until the early afternoon, go to work, come home at midnight and then get up at 6 am. and do it all over again, Barrett said.
