Thursday, June 23 Sunday, June 26 Rtcti The Star Spin: Marie Millikan, director of skating at the Carmel Ice Skadium, competed in the 1968 Olympics for the former Czechoslovakia, traveled the globe with Holiday on Ice and is a master-rated coach. Skating coach draws on world of experience SCRATCH 'N' DENT AND OVERSTOCK TONS OF DEALS IN THE STORE, THIS IS ONE EVENTYOU CAN'T MISS. FULL OF FLOOR MODELS, th ANNIVERSARY In their words Marie Millikan talks about how the Olympics have changed since her experience in the 1968 Games in Grenoble, France: "The heart of the Olympics really has not changed as far as the individual athletes go.

Of course, the professionalism has. "During my days, the Olympics were strictly for amateurs. You were not allowed to take any money for anything. You were not allowed to have any advertisement, even if you had a boot that you could see the manufacturer on the outside, you had to paint over it. It was a definite faux pas and you would be disqualified.

Now it's all about the advertisement all about the money you can get from it or for it "Something good comes out of it something bad comes out it. The good thing is that the athletes have some funds to train with for the future and don't have to worry about flipping hamburgers at McDonald's to support themselves. On the other hand, it becomes more about money than the purity of the sport The entire Olympics have changed because of the security issues. The Olympics I competed in and a couple of the Olympics after, there really wasn't a security issue. Athletes could come and go as they pleased.

Everybody would have a badge so that certain areas only the athletes or authorized people could go. "Now, I felt that the last (winter) Olympics at Salt Lake was more like a prison camp. There were tall barbed wires and fences all the way around each venue. It didn't matter what it was skiing, skating, bobsledding. "It really gave me a bad feeling.

It didn't feel like you wanted to celebrate the Olympics and the athletes "I understand why they did that I'm not complaining. I'm just saying it completely changed the face of the Olympic be eclectic www.houseworks.biz NW CORNER OF ALLISONVILLE 8. 82ND 5252 E. 82ND STREET 578-7000 Hour: Thurs Fri 10-8 Sat 10-6 Sun 10-5 Former Olympian teaches athletes of all levels pics, she was offered a contract by Holiday on Ice. Millikan traveled the world with Holiday on Ice, performing in Europe, South America, Japan and the Philippines.

Moving to the United States after her first marriage, she has lent her skating expertise to the Carmel Ice Ska- dium for 30 years as a master- rated coach. In Millikan's role as the Skadi-um's skating director, she is responsible for scheduling, program design and money collection. The facility's clientele ranges from tots to senior citizens in group or private lessons and programs. "It's a sport which I think people can enjoy at all levels," Millikan said. "It's not just for top athletes." While her duties vary by season, she is at the rink all day.

As a coach of figure-skating competitors, Millikan's role involves more than just teaching skating. She is involved in the total image of the skater, from helping to pick and design the costumes to choosing and editing the music. Her role also involves making sure a skater's daily routine is conducive to top-level skating, including proper nutrition and training off the ice. Only a few select figure skaters will ever make it to the Olympics, so Millikan tries to teach the person first and the skater second. She also teaches power skating for hockey players.

Although she stays busy, you'll never hear her complain about her job. "You never get bored, because you have different type of skating all day long instead of the same thing over and over like on the assembly line," Millikan said. She travels to major events and is responsible for covering the sport's technical aspects for the news service. "My job is to watch the skating, talk to skaters, explain the rules, explain the jumps and whether they are completed correctly or not and basically proof the articles for technical correctness," Millikan said. In addition, Millikan is active in the Professional Skaters Association as a rating team member. "I'm one of the 20 people who go cross-country and gives exams to coaches," said Millikan, who was in Boston last weekend to do just that. "In skating, we call it rating, but compared to other businesses it would be licensing." Millikan has two daughters: Michelle, a national collegiate champion in figure skating who works as a rink manager and coach in the Los Angeles area, and Melissa, an equestrian who works for a veterinarian.
