The federation's study said the average freshman will spend about $1,150 to prepare for this school year, with about half of that on electronics. For Caldwell, a biology freshman from Fort Wayne, his computer will be crucial for communicating with friends. "Not everyone is going to keep in touch by phone," said Caldwell, 18. "It's going to be a lot of e-mail, Instant Messenger and facebook." Computers in dorms give students instant access to social networks such as www.thefacebook.com, a Web site where students can create profiles, join groups based on interests and message students at their own colleges and other schools. Users can find people based on interests, such as a favorite movie, or search out people they've seen in their classes.

The site also allows students to search registered users based on things such as states and high schools, making it easy to find old classmates. "The facebook is really helpful to keep in touch with people from high school," said McGath, an 18- year-old pharmacy freshman from Columbus. "I just messaged someone about five minutes ago." "It wasn't required, but it was strongly encouraged," said the Spanish and speech pathology freshman at Butler. Osland and her roommate, Kathryn Lucas, 18, Chesterton, had many new purchases in their room in Schwitzer Hall. With a television, fridge, stereo, two laptops and a combination VCR player, free space is scarce in their 18-foot-by-12-foot room. Osland's mother, Joyce, looked frazzled as she examined stacks of boxes, clothes and gadgets waiting to be unpacked. "We didn't have a fridge, TV or computer," she said of her college days.

"We lived pretty cheap." Add two fans a necessity in a dormitory with no air conditioning and Osland and Lucas found themselves with a shortage of electrical outlets. Students are The Star encouraged to bring surge protectors, but university rules ban extension cords for fire safety. By next year some of those headaches should be eased as a new apartment village at Butler promises more space for students. Officials will break ground Friday on the $52 million student housing and health center project, which is set to open August 2006. Each apartment will have four single bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Whether spending thousands on computers or furniture, parents said it's money well spent if it makes their new college students happy and successful. "It's fun shopping for stuff, and you want them to feel at home," mother Jane Caldwell said. "You want a room where people will gather." Call Star reporter Rebecca Neal at (317) 444-2805..
