BR'V Revival At Methodist Church With Evangelist Preston Leading Miss Lovell Wright is Leading in SOUR and Services Daily and For Special Services Sunday The revival meeting at the Methodist church in San Saba is getting in full swing with Evangelist T.

W. Preston of Dallas doing the preaching and Miss Lovell Wright of Davis. Oklahoma, directing the music. The evangelist is bringing some heart-searching messages and Miss Wright is proving a wonderful sons lender. She is deeply spiritual and a wonderful organizer of the young people.

Services each day at .10 a. m. and 7:45 p. HI. Booster band boosts at 7:15.

The young people meet at the -same hour, 7:15 p. m. For Sunday The special services for next Sunday include the Sunday School at 9:45 a. m. A special! fitting program has been arranged for people past the half century mark, to be given at the 11 o'clock hour.

The subject will be "The Lord is My Shepherd." Rev. Preston will give his lecture, "Character vs. Gold" at 3 p. m. Sunday.

This outstanding lecture has been delivered by evangelist Preston to more than 6,000 audiences in 13 different states. Miss Wright will sing for this service. Sunday evening at 7:45 the evangelist will have for his subject "God's Blockade in the Road That Leads to Hell." At this service Wright will sing "The Old, Old Some special services for the men of the town are being arranged, but the details are not ready for announcement as this story ia written. Mor- cll, has been quite a busy man in these digging the past few days. No less than half a dozen cases were filed the first three days of the open season. The Hill Billies collected 12 hits and the Brownwood boys garnered 9 safe blows. Baxter pitched a nice game for San Saba. Page pitched for Brown wood and was driven from hte mound in 'the fifth inning, giving way to Farmer Ray. Ray found the going hard as the Hill Billies continued their hitting spree. Hoover, San Snba elongated first baseman, led the hitters with a triple a dauble and a single.

Mrs. W. R. Payne attended the funeral of her mother, Mrs. T.

J. Hocker, 85, in Lampasas Monday of last week. Deceased had'been a resident of Lampasas for more than 40 years and is survived by seven children and 12 grandchildren, Mra. Payne has" the sincere sympathy of many friends here. Former San Saba Girl Is Married To Menard Man The following announcement has been received here "Mr.

and' Mrs. A. G. Harrison announce the marriage of their daughter Susan to Mr. Menzies Sunday, th-i tw.enty-seventh- of August, nineteen hundred and thirty-two, Menard Texas." Miss "Kitty Sue" will be kindly remembered as a former county Demonstrator for San Saba county and very popular in all parts of the county.

She was also a Home EC teacher in the local high school before becoming county demonstrator. The San Saba friends will wish her an abundant happiness. S. A. Woman Named On Highway Body The state highway dcpartmeo Saturday had named Mrs.

Frank W. Sorell of San Antonio to the organization of women thruout the state to develop beautification plan for Texas highways, D. K. Martin, state highway commissioner, an- State-landscape architects and district engineers will assist the Antonio Light. Mrs.

Sorell is the wife of Dr. Frank W. Sorell, a native San Saba county boy, and who has extensive ranching interests in this county. After graduating from college Dr. Sorell practiced his profession short while in San Saba and then located in San Antonio, where he has risen rapidly and is recognized as a leader in his profession.

Mrs. Sorell will have the hearty good wishes and cooperation of the many San Saba friends. San Saba Teacher Goes Witb State Dept. of Education Prof. S.

G. Boynton, native San Saba county boy, has been appointed by state superintendent L. Woods as a deputy state superintendent under the new setup of the department of education. Mr. Boynton will be located at San Angelo and have charge of all schools in 17 counties surrounding San Angelo.

This will be gratifying news to the numerous friends in this county. Boynton formerly taught school in this county and for the past four or five years has been Supt. at Hutto. He received his M. A.

degree at the University of Texas at the close of the sumer school last week. G. R. Lane Residence Goes Up in Flames According to report from the Bethel community the residence of G. R.

Lane, pioneer citizen of, that community, was completely destroyed by fire about noon Mondayt No report is available as to the origin of the fire. Absolutely everything in the home is a loss, with no insurance. Mr. Lane is well known all over the county. He was one of the first settlers on Richland creek in the old Algerita community.

He is an Elder in the Church of Christ and has preached all over this country. Lafferty Family In Happy Reunion On Friday, August 25, a wonderful family reunion of the Lafferty family was enjoyed. The scene was in the shade of the trees at the Nettleship ranch on the Colorado river. An ideal fish fry dinner, with all the trimmings was served with a tine famtlfsr fellowship. H. Hinyard. Sfdr AND INSOFT 1405 Bales Ginned In Town Wednesday According to the records of G. H. Behrens, public weigher, there had been a total of 1405 bales of cotton ginned in town to ten o'clock Wed, nesday morning.

AH three gins are running day and night shifts an dthe cotton yard was open all night Tuesday. This is not an official figure, but well informed estimate that the ginning to date is nearly 60 per cent more than at tfie same time last year. The cotton is mostly open and all the available pickers are in the fields. Residence Burns On the Hall Ranch Early Wednesday morning the residence on the F. B.

Hall ranch a few miles east of town was completely destroyed by fire of unknown origin. The house is on the side of the" railroad track and contained the household goods of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Smith, who were staying temporarily at the Hall near the highway. ranch home Mmes.

With Home-Owned Nationally Known Institution, Opening New Business This Week The newly remodelled, painted and fixed up Williams building on Wallace street next door to City National Bank, is being occupied this week by a new business firm for the town and county.

Frank Hendrick, former man of Lamesa, Texas, had large truck loads of furniture two and fixtures at the door unloading early Tuesday morning and merchandise is being unloaded for the opening of this new business house for this trade area. Mr. Hendrick comes, to San Saba highly recommended by those who know him best, and he has former friends here, as a man of integrity and stability. He says he is coming to San Saba because has faith in the future of this town and county, and this faith is founded after a thorough investigation. He cordially invites the people to come in and get acquainted, look over his merchandise and allow him to bid for a liberal share of their patronage.

Drive To Support President Roosevelt and NRA Goes Over Town Practically 100 Per Cent Blue Eagle. Consumers Cards Going To Rural Districts The drive of the local committee in the campaign was put over on schedule time last week and San Saba business firms signed promptly and cheerfully. All have signed the blanket code and many of the institutions have their own industry codes which have been approved tr are In process of being approved by the national authorities. The Central NRA committee made a house to house canvass of the business district Friday. Extremely few hesitated, or asked questions, when the committee called on them.

The committee was under strict instruc- itons from headquarters that it is no part of the local committee's duty to argue or enforce the program. The executive committee is composed of the following memjbers: Mayor J. T. McConnell, chairman; Messrs. R.

Mayor McConnell is busy thh week getting committees lined up ir Richland CKerokee, Bend and all of the rural districts of the county for the consumers campaign. All the people are given a chance to sign this pledge to patronize only those firms and business institutions where the Blue Eagle is in evidence. Our people are 100 per cent behind President Roosevelt in his brave and courageous campaign to route the depression and bring prosperity back to, America. September To Be A Busy Month For Home Demonstrator Miss Lorena Dry left Saturday and will spend all this week in a district convention of county demonstrators in Kerrville. At this meeting plans for future work will be discussed, experiences exchanged and lectures fro mvarious authorities.

Soft Ball Tournament Got Off Good Start Last Week. Large Crowds and Good Sport Every Night The soft ball tournament got to going good last week with the schedule as published in the News. There has been the finest spirit of sportsmanship displayed in every game.

In another column is given the standing of each to Saturday night. This will be given for eaten week's schedule as the proceeds. There is a noticeable improvement in the fielding and team work of each and every team. As the teams stand today it is anybody's chance to win and go into the championsnip final series of games. Tne lights are fine and as the boys get used to playing under the lights it is all the more appreciated.

Talk already has it that arrangements must be made for the Armadillo football squad to play, at least a part of its games under the lights. The night games give everyone a chnace to see them. The games last week ran this way: Monday night, Firemen 8, Ruf 10; Grocers 8, Santa Fe 7. Tuesday night, Hoboes 4, Legion 18; Baptists 5, Highway 4. Thursday night, Ruf Nex 11, Grocers 12; Sanat Fe 4, Hoboes 1.

Friday night, Legion 6, Baptists Highwpy 0, Firemen 9. San Antonio Man Is First Hunting Victim of Season Dick 0. Terrell, president of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and director of the NRA drive there, was accidentally killed Sept. 1, the opening day of the dove shooting season. A loaded gun in the car was accidentally discharged.

Dr. Frank W. Sorell, formerly oi San Saba, and another close friend were returning from a hunt with Mr. Terrell when the accident happened. Live Oak Soft Ball Team Wins Richland Springs In the soft ball game played under "he lights at San Saba Saturday right the Live Oak team defeated Richlan dSprings by a score of 7-2.

and Mrs. R. Burleson find daughter, Miss Cordie, spent the holiday visiting in Waco, San Saba Officer Writes Letter To Gov. Sam Houston "The Raven," a biography of Sam Houston by Marquis James, has recently fallen into the hands of the News Editor. It is a readable book and has a peculiar interest for San Saba people.

In this book is the permanent record of a letter written by "Lige" Estep, at that time assessor and collector of taxes for San Saba county. The letter was written to Houston on August 19, 1860, in the fateful days just before the Civil War. Here is the letter: "Sam Houston, Govnr I have bin reElected to the office of Assessor and Collector of County Send me a SixShootor of the largest size and Bouy knife. E. Estep." Waco Party Here For the Holiday Outing on River A party of Waco business men enjoyed a wonderful outing on the beauitful San Saba for the week end and Labor holiday.

In the party were W. W. Woodson, president of the First National' Bank; C. V. Allin, manager for the Texas Cities Gas Alan Meador, also with the gas company, and Roy Hatch of the Wilkerson-Hatch undertakers establishment.

They report an enjoyable outing and are sure to come back again. San Saba County Singing Convention Meets at The San Saba County Singing convention will be held at Cherokee next Saturday and Sunday, Sept, 910. Leon Page, secretary of the convention, announces that everybody and their families are cordially inV vited, and especially the singers of the county and all surrounding counties. Come and bring sandwiches as there will be no dinner spread on Sunday. Singers have a special invitation to come Saturday and remain over for The next to the last convention met at Cherokee and was a great success, with large crowds of people attending.

Mrs. Lillian Gottschalk arrived last week to be ready for the ing of school next week. She teach in the Jocal wJwM. hoc been traveling with O. Gottschalk, a traveling the western states.
