America's shoppers had a tight grip on their wallets in June, dropping sales at the nation's retailers by 1.1 percent. June sales drop sharply Then's service that lets clients customize marketing materials online boosts local firm's offerings. By Norm Heikens norm.heikensindystar.com Aprimo, the Indianapolis firm whose software helps corporations manage marketing, has made its first acquisition a British peer with software that plugs a hole in Aprimo's lineup. The software of Then Ltd.

allows companies to customize marketing materials online. An auto dealer, for instance, could tweak advertisements to reflect local interest rates, work traditionally done by advertising agencies. Aprimo Chief Executive Bill Godfrey wouldn't disclose terms except to say that all 10 Then employees will join the 100 at Aprimo. But he emphasized the deal, which closed July 9, proves the 6-year-old company is on the offensive after surviving an intense industry shake-out. "Orientation of Aprimo from the get-go has always been to build an independent, highly valued enterprise right here in Indianapolis," Godfrey said.

"That's the path we're on." While refusing to describe Aprimo's sales beyond saying they exceed $20 million a year, Godfrey said Aprimo is at least five times larger than its nearest rival. Its 24 software products help companies plan marketing campaigns and communicate with customers as well as track production and sales leads. The overall marketing management niche is consolidating partly because many software firms were hit hard as companies slowed buying to navigate turbulent economic times. Then Ltd. was profitable, Godfrey said.

A strong second quarter of Aprimo sales to companies including The Home Depot and Warner Brothers helped fund the acquisition. Then Ltd. co-founder and Chief Executive Andrew Yates will remain with Aprimo as senior vice president of Europe. Looking ahead, though, buyers are expected to show more energy. The 1.1 percent decline in sales, reported Wednesday by the Commerce Department, followed a shopping splurge in May when merchants' sales rose 1.4 percent, better than previously estimated. Economists blamed the retreat in buying on bad weather and the lingering effects of high energy prices. Some analysts also said they believed June's slowdown in the growth of the nation's payrolls played a role. The economy added a net 112,000 jobs last month, less than half the number economists had forecast.

Stewart Current activities called by advisers her own decision. From C1 demeanor during the investigation into her 2001 sale of ImClone Systems shares, when she canceled some public appearances and dropped off the "Early Show" on CBS after the network insisted on asking her about the allegations against her. Before she was indicted last year, she was glimpsed at events like Clive Davis' Grammy party, present but not exactly appearing to enjoy herself.

While Stewart declined to be interviewed, her advisers say her current activity is her own decision not something dreamed up by image consultants. "She is trying to lead as normal a life as she can, and most of it is to try and assist the business in some way," said her lawyer, Robert Morvillo. She has even cooperated with the photographers she not so long ago tried to dodge, grinning last month as one snapped her picture for The New York Post while she rollerbladed down a leafy East Hampton lane wearing figure-. hugging workout clothes. "There is no reason why she should hide her face," said Dominick Dunne, a friend and Vanity Fair writer who attended her trial.

Some think her visibility in the social pages might backfire at sentencing. Lawyers familiar with the federal system say she is likely to receive 10 to 16 months, but the final decision is up to the judge. Factors like remorse do play a role in determining how much time a person spends behind bars. "She is not coming across well," said Edward W. Hayes, a trial lawyer in Manhattan who has handled several high-profile cases.

"It continues to be all about her and she never does say anything about the people who got hurt. There has been no exhibition of remorse. Those are the only things that can affect her sentence." But Stewart's friends say that the prospect of prison time is very much on her mind. In her private moments, they say, she has shed tears over the verdict and the probability that she will spend at least a few months in prisoa Stewart was convicted on four charges, all stemming from her sale of ImClone stock, which took place shortly before the company announced disappointing news that sent its stock sharply down. Her ex-broker, Peter Bacanovic, was also convicted on four charges and will be sentenced in a separate hearing on Friday.

sales was the largest since February 2003, when sales fell at the same rate. June's fall was sharper than the 0.7 percent drop some economists had forecast. In the retail report, the falloff was led by a 43 percent decrease in sales at automobile dealerships, compared with May's 3.2 percent gain. All other sales dipped by 0.2 percent in June matching economists' expectations compared with a 0.9 percent rise in May. Sales at clothing stores, department stores, food and beverage stores, gasoline stations and bars and restaurants all showed declines in June.

Showing sales gains were furniture, electronics and appliances, building and garden supplies, health and beauty products, and sporting goods, books and music. Indiana state regulators would review the economic effects of Harrah's divestiture choice and could impose restrictions on the company, he said. The company also would have to agree to honor existing agreements with local governments if it gets approval to operate the Harrison County casino. The report reinforced the notion that consumer spending slowed from April through June, although overall growth for these months still was expected to be decent, economists said.

Analysts did not view the June results as a sign consumers will become so tightfisted as to threaten the economic recovery. Instead, they were hopeful shoppers in the current quarter will return to buying, especially if the job climate improves. "Does this huge drop-off in demand mean consumers have closed up shop? Hardly," said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors. "With the labor market firming and income growing, they should be able to sustain solid consumption the rest of the year." The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday night that the purchase could be completed in about a year, after antitrust and gambling regulators approve the deal.

The companies began negotiating after MGM Mirage cemented a deal last month to buy Mandalay Resort Group for $4.8 billion in cash, the source said.
