He grew up in Indiana where he played basketball for or Van Buren and Brazil High Schools. After attending Indiana State, he graduated from Indiana University where he was a member and President of Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He was an infantry company commander during WWII and while in the Philippines helped reorganize the Philippine Scout 12th Di Division.

His company was selected as Honor Company and participated in the Philippin Independence Day Parade in Manila, July 4, 1946. Some of these men were in the Bataan Death March earlier in the war. Over the years, he was active in many civic organizations as a member and officer; i.e., Spirit of '76 Colonial Colour Guard, Community Chest, Cub Scouts, Tween Clubeague, Imhurst College Mentor Program, American Legion of Palatine, VFW, Elks Club of Des Plaines and many others. He was Worshipful Master of the Palatine Masonic Lodge Other Masonic organizations Joe was active in as Past President: NWSSC and Sojourners. He was 3 also a member of the Medinah Temple and Nunda Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Arch, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Commandery.

After a long and distinguished career with The Upjohn Company, Joe Krieble retired as National Accounts Director. Also, he was a member or officer of a number of business organizations. He was a recipient of The Upjohn Award, the highest award his company offered plus numerous other recognitions. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Joe's spirit of helping children, please make donations in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children Fiscal Service, 2211 N. Oak Park Chicago, IL 60707.

Thank you, his loving wife, Jean. Juanita E. Lawhorn 79, of Sun City Center, FL formerly of Indianapolis died February 21, 2004. She was a homemaker and member of P.E.O. Chapter W.

Survivors include: her husband, Donald; two daughters, Cynthia Romine and her husband, Bob, and Deborah Modlin and her husband, Dan; a son, Bruce Lawhorn and his wife, Anita; and 6 grandchildren. Arthur E. Lykins 78, Brownsburg, died Feb. 23, 2004. He was the Director of Utilization for Citizens Gas for 27 years, retiring in 1984. Arthur was a U.S.

Mr. Mitchell worked as a machinist for Detroit Diesel Allison and retired from there. He i is survived by eight sons, John H. Adams, Aaron L. Coleman, Britt, Gary Jerry Paul and Stephen D.

Mitchell, and Sigmond Roberson; four daughters, Terri Foote, Debra Roberson, Betsy Rouse, Kim 25 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. Services be 11 a.m. Friday, February 27 in Marvin L. Boatright Funeral Services, 2701 N. California St.

He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was a decorated combat veteran. He embarked early in his life on a performance career that highlighted his skills as a tap and character dancer on stages in London, Canada, New York and throughout the Eastern United States. His interest in the performing arts, inspired by his first teacher, his mother Irma, led him to study at the Chicago Arts Institute. In 1955, following the footsteps of both of his brothers, he began his work in the funeral business and attended the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and became a licensed funeral director. James entered the seminary in St.

Mary's Kentucky in 1959 and was ordained May 7, 1967. He became Assistant Pastor of St. Mark the Evangelist, Indianapolis; 1972, Assistant Pastor, Holy Spirit, Indianapolis; 1973, Assistant Pastor, St. Michael, Brookville; 1974, Pastor, Holy Guardian Angels, Cedar and AssistPastor, St. Michael, Brookville; 1978, Administrator St.

John the Baptist, Dover and continuing as pastor, Holy Guardian Angels, Cedar Grove; 1986 Pastor, Church of the American Martyrs, Scottsburg Patrick, Salem; 1993, Sacramental Assistance to St. Charles Borromeo, Milan; 1995, retired. He also as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council Funeral services will be Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.

Piper 70, of Indianapolis, passed away February 23, 2004. He was born March 27, 1933 at Central City, KY to Fred and Hessie (Cotton) Piper. He married Martha J. (Smith) Piper May 17, 1956 in Chicago and she passed away February 23, 1997. Mr.

Piper was employed 12 years by Smith-Kline-Beechman Laboratories, retiring in 1998, as a courier driver and was previously employed by Chrysler Corporation, Indianapolis for 17 years. He was a member of Garfield Heights Church of Christ. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 26 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with calling 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 25.

Paulin 79, Indianapolis, passed away February 21, 2004. Mr. Paulin was born September 6, 1924 in Dayton, Ohio. He was retired from Eli Lilly in 1987 with thirty years of service. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and proudly served his country in the Army during WWII.

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge in both Eaton Ohio and Indianapolis. He was also a member of Murat Shrine and Scottish Rite. Mr. Paulin is survived by his wife, Joan (Stevens) Paulin; one daughter, Pat Ellis; one son, Kent Paulin; and three grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, February 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Waiting Station of Crown Hill Cemetery, 34th and Boulevard Place. Inurnment will be in the Field of Valor Mausoleum at Crown Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's, Awareness Foundation or Leukemia Society. Daniel J. Phelan 56, died Sunday, February 22, 2004. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana he was the former owner of Hawes-Phelan Insurance Group, in Columbus, Indiana. Daniel attended North Central High School in Indianapolis and received his B.A. degree from California State University at Long Beach.

Serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. In Columbus, Indiana he was a member of Rotary, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of Harrison Lake Country Club. An avid boat Captain he was an active member of the Marine Trader Owners Association. He is survived by his wife, Karen L.

Phelan; daughter, Shana M. Phelan of West Palm Beach, Florida; son, Darron J. Chadwick and his wife, Jennifer of Indianapolis, Indiana; father, John D. Phelan of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida; brother, William P. Phelan of Carrollton, Texas; and grandson, Connor Chadwick.

His mother, Isabel McL Phelan and brother, John W. "Jack" Phelan preceded him in death. A memorial celebration will be held on Friday, February 27th at 1 p.m. at South Brevard Funeral Home, Melbourne, Florida. Mary Wehrel Ruddick 91, of Plainfield, passed away Feb. 24, 2004 in Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis. Mrs. Ruddick was born on April 16, 1912 in Indianapolis to Joe and Helen Fromer Wehrel. She married Joseph Ruddick on Feb.

29, 1936 in Indianapolis. She was a member of the Plainfield Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2004, in Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield. Services will be Friday, February 27, 2004, at 11 a.m.

in the funeral home with Steve White officiating. Survivors include her husband, Joe Ruddick; sons, Jim Ruddick of Plainfield, and Bob Ruddick of St. Louis; granddaughters, Linda, Nancy, Trisha and Julie; and five great -grandchildren. 26. Chrystal I. Sowers Ruesch 93, passed away at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, IN, February 23, 2004. She was formerly of Indianapolis. Chrystal was a clerk and bookkeeper for Borden Milk Ice Cream for over nine years and was a member of the Eastminister Presbyterian Church and a 58-year member of the West Newton OES Chapter Services will be held Friday, February 27, at 10:00 a.m.

with visitation from 9:00 a.m. at Indiana Masonic Home, 690 S. State Franklin, IN. Survivors include her son, Gene (Joyce) Ruesch, sisters, Mabel Nichols, Lela Owens and grandson, William L. Ruesch.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Indiana Masonic Home Foundation. Services entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel. Burial will be private. Renee' Allen Shaw 51, Indianapolis, died Feb. 20, 2004.

Burial: New Crown Cemetery. Gladys A. Sherfick 98, Indianapolis, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2004 at Westminster Village North. She was born Gladys Brown on November 14, 1905 near Loogootee, IN, to Emanuel and Mary Etta (Ellis) Brown. She attended schools there and graduated from Salem High School.

She and her husband, John H. Sherfick, who died in 1994, lived in Indianapolis for nearly 60 years. Her two sisters and three brothers, as well as an infant daughter, Mary Ann Sherfick, have also preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and helper in her husband's contracting business and his loving caregiver for many years. She was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church, and also attended services at Holy Eucharist Church.

She is survived by her son, Don Sherfick, his partner, Jerry Hicks; grandchildren, Alice (John) Shelton, Cindy (John) Schassberger, Ted (Kim) Sherfick, and Ed Sherfick, as well as eight great-grandchildren. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews, her longtime friends and neighbors in the Broad area, and the residents and staff of Westminster Village North. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2004 at the Marian College Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday, February 26 -with additional calling to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center Broad Ripple, with a Prayer Service at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral center, prior to services at the Marian College Chapel. St. Louis 77, of Indianapolis, passed away Monday, February 23, 2004 at his home. He retired in 1989 as a District Manager for Kmart after 23 years of service. Previously he had been a district manager for Earl Scheib Auto Painting for 15 years. He was a veteran of the Canadian Army and a member of St.

Mark Catholic Church. Calling will be Thursday, February 26 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home with a prayer service Friday, February 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Donald Clark Stokes 72, Indianapolis, passed away Februlary 23, 2004. He was a Real Estate Broker for 12 years, retiring in 2000. Donald was also the owner of Clark-Lee Co. as an interior designer. Donald is a member of the American Legion Post He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force.

Services will be held Thursday, February 26 at 10 a.m. with visitation Wednesday, February 25 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St. Memorial contributions may be made to Indianapolis Humane Society.

Survivors include: his wife of 50 years, Barbara A. Polaski Stokes; sons, Christopher Kurt M. (Michelle) Stokes; daughters, Lezlie D. (Ron) Bounin, Stephanie L. (Bob) Meyer, Jan M.

F. Young, now de-ceased, was Pastor of the church for 60 years. Naomi Taborn was educated at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She was the oldest living alumni of Indiana State University. Naomi formerly taught school in Maryland in 1924.

Survivors: niece, Ruth Hazel Scott; 2 nephews; one great nephew; 3 great nieces; and sister-in-law, Marie Young. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 in First Baptist Church North Indianapolis with calling from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Arrangements: Grundy Memorial Chapel.

7, William T. Wicker 85, Greenfield, passed away on February 23, 2004. Mr. Wicker was born December 3, 1918 in Shelby County, Indiana, son of William and Lelah (Boles) Wicker, both whom preceded him in death. He was married to Leah (Kyser) Wicker and she died on April 1, 2002.

William graduated from Westland High School. He was a Farm Implement Mechanic, retiring in 1980. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Charlottesville Friends Church, a former member of Walnut Ridge Friends Church and Westland Friends Church.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post Greenfield. He is survived by one son, Alan Wicker of Greenfield; one daughter, Pamela S. Austin of Greenfield; one brother, James "Gene" Wicker of Greenfield; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, February 27 at the Charlottesville Friends Church, with Fred Powers officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, February 27 at Ashbury Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlottesville Friends Church or donor's choice.
