She was a 20 year employee, retiring in 1985 from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Indpls. In 1954 she married Garner Hurst in Livingston, TN.

After working as a civil and structural engineer for the State of Indiana, he was a partner in consulting engineering firms until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of Castleview Baptist Church and the Super Sixties at the Church, American Legion, Tau Beta Phi, Delta Tau Delta, and Chi Epsilon. Wittenberg Shook, who survives. Neil was a 1971 graduate of Indiana University, graduating with distinction, and a 1975 graduate of Indiana University Law School, Indianapolis, graduating Magna Cum Laude. A well respected member of Indianapolis legal community, Neil began his distinguished legal career at the law firm of Bamberger Feibleman in 1975. When partners Elliott Levin and George Rubin formed their own firm in 1977, Neil and his wife Debbie left Bamberger Feibleman to establish the firm of Rubin Levin, where Neil was a partner until his retirement in 1998 due to his failing health. He was an author of numerous articles on commercial and bankruptcy law and a frequent lecturer for the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Foundation.

He was Past President of the Indianapolis Bar Association. In addition, he was Adjunct Professor of Bankruptcy at Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, for seven years. He was the recipient of the Paul H. Buchannan, Jr. Award of Excellence, Indiana State Bar Association Presidential Citation for exceptional contributions to the profession of law, and other awards too numerous to mention.

Neil was an inspiration and a mentor to many young attorneys practicing in Indianapolis and throughout Indiana. He will be remembered as a "lawyer's who practiced law with great honor, integrity civility. An avid sportsman and outstanding athlete, Neil was especially fond of fly fishing and canoeing with his friends and family. He was also an active soccer dad with both of his son's high school and college teams. Neil bravely battled ALS "Lou Gehrig's Disease," for 8 years, and in 2002 attended the walk to D' feet ALS in Carmel.

Team Shook, comprised of friends, family and the North Central men's soccer and obtained a sizeable donation team, grew to or over 100 walkers for the ALS Foundation. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Debbie J. (Lohman) Shook, with whom he practiced law at Rubin Levin; sons, Evan, a junior at DePauw, and Ryan, a graduating senior at North Central High School. Neil also leaves behind his mother, Norma J. (Wittenberg) Shook of Valparaiso, IN; sisters, Susan Shook Osburn, of Dallas, Texas, and Debbie Shook Hermes, of Lake Forest, Illinois.
