Rogers, who had worked recently as a freelance writer supplying columns to a number of publications, died Sunday at Georgetown University Hospital, his family said. Rogers, a former Associated Press correspondent, was a longtime member of the Gridiron Club, a group of Washington journalists that exists mostly for an annual roasting of politicians. A native of New Orleans, Rogers studied at Tulane and Louisiana State universities before joining the Marine Corps in 1942 and serving in World War II. He began his journalism career at the New Orleans Morning Tribune after the war, then joined The Associated I Press in 1947, first Karen S.

Bates 89. Indianapolis and Punta Gorda, Florida, died on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at Manor Care in Carmel. In his final hours, he was surrounded by Catherine, his wife of 61 of his 13 grandchildren. Services will be Thursday, September 4, at 10 a.m. at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary followed the Mass of Christian Burial, held at St.

Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery. Friends may call the Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E. 71st Street, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3.

Carl Bates was born February 4, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While living in Philadelphia, he married Catherine Nowicke on June 20, 1942. He moved to Indianapolis in 1944 and founded Bates Art Supply at Ohio and Delaware Streets downtown, and he served as owner and president of Bates until 1980. Mr.

Bates was a former board member of the National Art Material Trade Association and the International Blueprinters Association. Mr. Bates was active in Republican politics for several decades. He was elected to the Beech Grove City Council in 1962 and served until 1970. He served as a delegate to the Republican State Convention in the 1960s and was a precinct committeeman in Beech Grove during the 1960s.

He was a member of the Beech Grove Lions Club for 50 years and served as both president of the club and zone chairman. He was a life member of Msgr. Downey Council No 3660, Knights of Columbus. Mr. Bates was a member of St.

Luke Catholic Church. He was also past president of the Holy Name Catholic Church school board in Beech Grove and was a member of the parish board of trustees. Besides his wife, Carl is survived by one son and three daughters, all of Indianapolis area: Carl R. (Marjory) Bates; Elizabeth (Bill) Beck; Barbara (Ken) Kern; and Cathleen (Ralph) Purcell. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Lara Beck; Jennifer Beck Clayton; Leslie and Lauren Kern; Sister Mary Grace Bates, Little Sisters of the Poor; Sarah, Carl P.

and Catherine Bates; Justin, Adam, Brad, Austin and Ralph Purcell. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carl C. and Lela Bates. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor in care of St. Augustine Home for the Aged, 2345 W.

In Washington, he covered the State Department, White House and Congress, including the McCarthy hearings. He joined the Washington bureau of the New York Herald Tribune in 1959, specializing in military and foreign affairs, and covered both the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement in the South. Rogers organized a Washington bureau for Hearst Newspapers in 1963 and later covered a series of national political conventions and wrote several books, including "When I think of Bobby: A Personal Memoir of the Kennedy Years." Rogers is survived by his wife, Alla Rogers, two children Patricia Rogers Wagaman of Laurel, and Sean J.

Rogers and granddaughter Margot Hilda Cerutti. Wilber D. Bowman 86, Kirklin, died Aug. 31, 2003. He was born March 28, 1917 in Clinton County to the late Alva and Fannie (Pickard) Bowman.

Mr. Bowman was a pipefitter 28 years for Firestone Tire, Noblesville, retiring in 1969. He had been president and served on the Kirklin Town Board. Mr. Bowman was a past member of Sugar Creek Christian Church and attended Kirklin Wesleyan Church.

Services: 10 a.m. Sept. 4 at Genda Funeral Home, Frankfort, with calling from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 3.

Burial: Oakhill Cemetery. Contributions: Kirklin Volunteer Fire Department, Kirklin Town Board, or the Wesley Manor Memory Care Unit. Larry L. Casner 163, Westfield, died Aug. 31, 2003. He was born March 19, 1940 in Martinsville, IN and was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. Mr.

Casner worked 30 years for Chrys- ler retiring in 1997. He served in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 in McMullan Funeral Home, Westfield, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m.

Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, following a courageous battle with tonsil cancer, he was 58. Born July 25, 1945 to Richard Hatton Duke and Patricia Eloise Duke, Dr. Duke's father was a long time minister of Southminster Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, where Dr. Duke accepted Jesus Christ as his savior, standing before his father in 1972. A graduate of Franklin Central High School, 1963 and Hanover College, 1967, Dr.

Duke earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees at Indiana University. A life-long educator, Dr. Duke began his career at Belzer Jr. High, Indianapolis as a math teacher and athletics director. He was the first assistant principal at Lawrence North High School when it opened in 1976.

Dr. Duke served as principal at Franklin Central High School from 1986 to 1989, when he became principal at Carmel High School, serving until his retirement in 2002. Dr. Duke was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principal and the Indiana Association of School Principals where he served as vicepresident, president-elect, president and board member from 1999 to 2002. He was a state committee member for the North Central Association and an alumni board member of the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy where he served as an initial planner and facilitator for the professional organization.

He also served as a board member of the Carmel Clay Educational Association, a member of the Carmel Clay Chamber of Commerce and a worship board member of Grace Community Church, Carmel. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Duke served as a member of the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy Blue Ribbon Design Team. In 2000, the Indiana Association of School Principals named him "Secondary Principal of the Year." He was also an adjunct professor in school ol administration at Butler University from 1996 to 2000. In addition to his work, Dr.

Duke's passions included music, golf and gardening. An accomplished keyboardist and guitarist, Dr. Duke played in several bands, beginning ng while a student at Hanover and continuing up to his most recent birthday in July. He also performed with the Grace Community Church Band. Both of his children have followed his lead in becoming musicians as well.

Beloved by his family, students and friends, among the many descriptions of "Bill" are that he was a man of integrity, loyalty, intelligence and compassion, and that he maintained a deep devotion to his Lord, Jesus Christ. Quick-witted and brilliantly perceptive, Dr. Duke demonstrated an uncanny ability to identify problems and find workable solutions. His grace and courage throughout his life, particularly during his long battle with cancer, underscore his unselfish concern for others and his ability to rise above personal hardship. Said one close friend, "Bill has set the bar awfully high for the rest of us!" Dr.

Kern 56, Beech Grove, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003. She was born Dec. 23, 1946 in Whiteland, IN. Her father was Calvin G.

Law. Her mother is Sarah Ellen (Honeay) Law of Beech Grove, IN. She married Paul W. Kern, Jr. on March 13, 1965 in Indianapolis, he survives.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula S. Farber of Whiteland, IN, and Lori A. Kern of Indianapolis; three brothers, Michael Law of Port St. Lucie, FL, Russell Law and Jimmy Law, both of Indianapolis; five sisters, Mary Martin, Patti Roska, Jan Kirby, and Peggy Warren, all of Indianapolis, and Martha Alford of Beech Grove; five grandchildren, Jessika Anne Young, Joshua Paul Young, Janelle Lynn Farber, Justin Anthony Farber, and Jennifer Lynn Kern. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father. She was employed for 31 years by Brylane in Indianapolis as a supervisor, retiring in 1996. A will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at Forest Lawn Wilson St.

Kish was born on December 26, 1918 in East Chicago, IN to the late Steve and Anna (Szukics) Kish. Mr. Kish was a pipefitter for 30 years, having been a member of the Pipefitters Local 597 since 1955. He graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1938 and attended Commercial Trade Institute and Purdue University. In addition, he was a member of St.

Luke Catholic Church, Lacare League, and Southeastern Art League. Prior to moving to Indianapolis, he was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Hammond. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to '8 p.m. in Leppert Hensley Mortuary, Nora Chapel.

Kersey Kitchen 81, West Plains, MO, passed away August 29, 2003 at her residence. She was born on January 21, 1922 in Putnam Co. She was a 1940 graduate of Fillmore High School and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. Later she received Anethesia training at Cincinnati General Hospital and later became Chief of Adult Division Anethesia Dept. at DeLoge Hospital in St.

Louis, MO. She also was a Surgery Nurse in Putnam Co. Hospital and a Nurse for Dr. Parker in Greencastle. IN 1965 she married Clarence Kitchen and after retirement they moved to Riverton, MO and was active in many community affairs receiving Oregon County Person of the Year Award in 1999.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence; sisters, Lillian Ellett Coatesville and Frances Dever of Altamonte, FL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Lois (McAninch) Kersey; and sisters, Mildred Jean Kersey, Kathleen Hanlon, Beryl Pritchett and Maxine Clawson. He was president and owner of Speedway Machine and Tool Co. Mr. Roth was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Scottish Rite, and was a 50-year member of North Park Masonic Lodge and County Club of Indianapolis. Services will be at 11 a.m.
