Given Support of Chair man of 3 Council Committees The city confronted today with i exceptionally heavy demands on its treasury In the form of relief with the launching of the ERA still de layed adopted a new policy of meet ing the demands of men who apply to the Danville Social Service for aid saying that they have no jobs and nothing to eat rom now on any man or woman who is able to work and who applies for a grocery ticket will have to work for it This does not apply to the normal number of families without means of support or whose heads ot families are by reason of Illness un able to support the family The new policy was arrived at this morning at a meeting In the city hall attended by the chairmen of the three committees of the city council Townes finance Jesse Yarbrough public works and Edmund Meade welfare Representing the Danville Social Service were Waylcs Harrison Robert West and Rodgers The Social Service representatives sought the approval of the three committee chairmen to a new policy which has become necessary they said owing to the number of people who are applying for relief and who do not expect to work for it Under the new plan the relief applicant will be assigned to work in one of the branches of the city either on pub lic works or elsewhere and in return will be given a time ticket indicat ing that such person ha earned the relief provided Some instances have come to light it is said in which it ha been found that persons applying for relict have made no effort to obtain employ ment and who have expressed the thought that it 1 now incumbent on the city to take care of them Mr Harrison made It clear tnav the Danville Social Service is not attempting to launch a new means of employment and will apply the new ixillcy only in cases were men and women apply for relfet upon de claring that they have been unable to get work to do The Danville Social Service 1 swamped hy the number of applica tions and with a limited number nf case workers It Is almost Impos sible to make full invcstlgsiion of each one In March they made 1358 visits to various homes monthly report tiidw that men applied for relief and nd men The sum spent relict was $335503 alone Some nf the colored people have complained that they arc not being juatly dealt with and many ot those who have been refused aid have tak en their canes to the president of the Social Service himself Under the proposed plan the ap I pllcant for relief will be put to work I on some form of labor or other con so a to relieve John Berkeley perlntendent of Johnson admitted and three hundred children In ex cess of the normal complement are receiving their instruction Despite the overcrowded condition there Is no hazard he said The city will have to pay for the tuition of at least one hundred city children in county schools next ses sion for they will be compelled to i receive their schooling in the coun ty This condition prevails at the present time but under the annexa tion decree Danville does not have to pay this year for their tuition In North Danville suburbs are about 100 county children are receiving In struction in what are now city schools On this side of the river there are two hundred children going to the Schoolfield schools During the coming school session Danville will have to pay the county the dif ference or for 100 children on a pro
