Thursday, Septcmbt-ris, i)83 South Bay Business Channel zooms on the South Bay By Judy Dost-Jones Staff Writer Deciding to be different and "get away from the flock," organizers of San Diego's new Channel 69 television station settled on a South Bay location for its studios. "God, did I look at a lot of buildings," said George Stantis, general manager. "I thought if I had to look at one more building. We looked at every available building in Kearny Mesa where all the other stations are.

It occurred to us that what we are attempting to be is different and unique, so with that thought we decided to get away the flock." After searching the county, a building at 1696 Frontage Road, next to the salt ponds west of Interstate '5, was selec'ted, making the station not "only the newest in San Diego County, but also the third largest in terms of studio size. Only the studios of Channels 8 and 10 are larger. Factors in choosing the South Bay location include the hospitable atmosphere in Chula Vista, lack of traffic congestion and exposure to 1-5, where nearly Key interest rates jn is" 100,000 people travel daily, according to Stantis. The benefit to the South Bay is the accessibility of the studio to South Bay citizens and the positive image that a television station brings to a community, Stantis said. When Channel 69 goes on the air in late December or early January it will offer family oriented programming.

Although specific programming has not yet been decided, one show being considered would be a locally produced show tentatively named "Mama Cooks Best." The show would be filmed in the kitchens of viewer-nominated community cooks. News reporting will be in short five to ten minute spots, augmented with in-depth programs on specific issues. The channel will also offer syndicated programs such as a previously overlooked classic "You Are There," with Walter Cronkite. "In television the prime function is to entertain," Stantis said. "I love it when people laugh we are going to offer a lot of that." Channel 69's history dates back more than two years when the Federal Communications Commission offered the channel for licensing.

"The FCC, in all its wondrous wisdom, threw up a piece of paper and said, 'Hey, here's Channel 69 come and get Stantis said. In response to the offer, about a dozen people applie'd. Out of the 12, a coalition of four emerged and were granted a license. The diverse ethnicity of the group has made Channel 69 one of only 18 minority owned stations out of 600 stations in the United States, according to Stantis. "This is a unique group, with equal parts of Oriental, black and Latino," he said.
