BAKED HAM*-Rum currant sauce '/a Bone-ln-ham (5 to 1 Ibs.) Vi e. minced onion 2 c. carbonated cola drink »/4 c. currant jelly Va t. dried currants Vk e. rum V& c. apple juice or cider IVz e. pan gravy from ham Place ham, fat side up on rack In open roasting pan. Pour cola drink over. Baste several times during belong. Bake ot 325°, 22 minutes per Ib. Ham will register 160' on meat thermometer when done. Prepare sauce while ham it baking. To prepare sauce: Pour boiling water over currants to cover. let stand 5 minutes to plump. Drain and set aside. In ci saucepan combine eider, onion and currant jelly. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add rum and I'/a cups cola pan gravy from ham. Strain. Add currants and simmer 2 minutes. Serve as a sauce with ham. Makes about 2 Vs cups sauce. Super Tip: If pan gravy does not measure l'/z cups, add carbonated cola drink. GRILLED STEAK SANDWICHES There are still many days left in the fall of the year for outdoor cooking over the grill. Sandwich steaks are a favorite prepared this way. 8 sandwich steaks IVa Tbsp. salad oil Vi c, catsup 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 3 Tbsp. Vinegar Va tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. water 8 toasted buns Combine all ingredients except sandwich steaks and buns and heat to simmering stage. Pour over sandwich steaks and let marinate 20 minutes. Arrange steaks in hinged hamburger grill 2" from hot coals. Grill quickly on one side. Turn and grill on other side. Serve In toasted, buttered buns with remaining sauce. Pan method: Place small amount of fat in skillet. Heat. Fry Steaks quickly on both sides. Super Tip: If you do not have a hinged hamburger grill, it is more difficult to cook sandwich steaks over coals since they are so thin. Better, then, to use the pan method and sprinkle a little smoked salt or liquid smoke on the meat. NORA'S COCOA DREAMS My mother brought this recipe from Florida. Stir In eggs. Sift flour, cocoa, and salt together. Beat in alternately with sour milk. Add wda to boiling, water and stir in. Drop by rounded tablespoonsful on iingreased cookie sheets. Cream together- t c. shortening 2 eggs 1 c. brown sugar 1 ttp. vanilla 1 c. white sugar Stir in— 2 e. flour, sifted with 1 tsp. each of toda, baking powder, salt Stir in— 2 c. Oatmeal With your hands i e , coconut and 1 c. chopped mix in— walnuts Chill slightly and roll into 2 long rolls about 2" in diameter. Wrap tightly and freeze. Slice in VA" slices and bake on ungreased baking sheets in 375° oven, 10 to 12 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen.
