Blood clot drug may save lives BOSTON (UPI) Researchers say an experimental drug produced by genetic engineering technology appears highly effective in dissolving blood clots in the lungs, a problem that kills 50,000 Americans a year. If future research confirms the initial findings, scientists said the drug could reduce the number of deaths from lung clots. called pulmonary The drug, called rt-PA, dissolved clots in 37 of 40 patients treated in a study at Brigham and Women's Hos-. pital, according to a report to be published Friday in the British medical journal Lancet. "It is extremely effective and appears to be quite safe," said Dr.

Eugene Braunwald, chief of medicine at the hospital. "We think it's a significant improvement over what's available for a very common problem." ABOUT 50,000 Americans die and another 300,000 are hospitalized each year from blood clots that usually form in the leg because of inactivity and lodge in the lung, blocking blood vessels. Another drug, streptokinase, is used to dissolve clots but is only effective in about half the patients and often causes excessive. bleeding. Braunwald said.

The new drug, known formally as recombinant human tissue-type plasminogen activator, is produced through genelic enginecring techniques from TPA, a substance that occurs naturally in the blood. It was previously shown to be effective for dissolving blood clots in coronary arteries of heart attack victims. In the new study, patients suffering. from blood clots were given the substance intravenously over a two-hour period. If their clots had not completely dissolved within that time, another dose was given over four hours.

Within six hours, there was evidence of at least moderate clot dissolving in 85 percent of the patients. Although several patients experienced excess bleeding from the drug, the bleeding only became serious in one patient, who was able to be treated. in the coverage, DAILY HERALD Eleanor Hoh Services for Eleanor Hoh, 75, of Libertyville, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E.
