Today, Northern serves 339 Iowa communities with natural gas through its utility customers and its own retail division, Peoples Natural Gas. With the completion of the 1967 construction program, Northern will have increased to 361 the number of communities it serves in Iowa. Northern, its subsidiaries and divisions, operate 6,209 miles of pipeline in Iowa and the company has large compressor plants at Oakland, Ogden, Paullina, Ventura and Waterloo. Natural Gas Travels Long Way To Area The natural gas which you will soon be receiving may travel more than 1,000 miles before reaching your range and furnace. Your local utility which will distribute this natural gas -to customers, buys the gas from Northern Natural Gas Company, a transmission firm serving the northern plains. Northern withdraws natural gas from three principal areas in the Southwest. One of these is the Hugoton field in southwestern Kansas, and another lies under the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. The third main area of gas supply is the Permian Basin field in southwestern Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The gas for Northern Natural's pipeline system comes from 3,500 wells throughout the Southwest. The gas comes from wells of gas producers and are dedicated to Northern under gas purchase contracts. Gas reserves controlled by Northern exceed 14.4 trillion cubic feet. Northern Natural Gas maintains 21,600 miles of pipeline to provide a supply of natural gas to 1,000 Midwestern communities. Northern's entire transmission system is divided into six distinct areas with operations offices co-ordinating both pipeline and compressor station activity. These operation offices are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Des Moines, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska; Great Bend, Kansas; Liberal, Kansas; and Midland, Texas. In every case, these areas are further subdivided into pipeline districts with Northern offices centrally located in the district. Northern's own personnel, in addition to being employees, are substantial owners. Over 2,700 employees of Northern and its subsidiaries hold over 376,000 shares either as owners of record or beneficially through the com- pany's Employees' Trusteed Stock Pur chase Plan. Besides its common stock controlled by over 26,000 investors, Northern has issued preferred stock held by more than 2,900 persons. The 37-year-old corporation has paid dividends consistently since 1935. Gas sales volume has more than doubled in the past 12 years, indicating high customer-satisfaction with both product and service. Heartbeat Of Natural Gas Is Compressor The heartbeat of a pipeline transmission company such as Northern Natural Gas is the compressor station that pumps gas from the well to the consumer. Northern has 68 compressor stations in a seven-state area which includes New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. The fundamental purpose of the compressor station is to pack the natural gas in pipelines so it can be transmitted to the users. Natural gas as it enters a compressor station is cleaned, compressed and cooled, and is then on its way to the consumer. These stations are located at approximately 100-mile intervals along the transmission line. To insure the consumer of dependable natural gas service, compressor stations are operated around the clock. The site of a compressor station must be selected carefully as to quality of subsoil and accessibility of good water. A medium-size compressor station will use as much as 200,000 gallons of water a day. Northern has 431 compressor engines along its system, generating over 632,000 horsepower. Each engine represents an investment up to $230,000. There are about 150 valves on an engine, requiring the attention of an oiler during every eight-hour shift. The compressor stations are manned by approximately 1,300 regular full-time employees. COLORADO r KANSAS FIELD '\ v «» ... ' . ^ OKLAHOMA NEW MEXICO "... $AS FIELD v- •\. I !
