org. Off 68 Friday, August 10, 2012 21 Steiner and Scott will be joined by An-gie McGrew, Brenda Tollefson and Patty Brem on the two-week trip. This will be the first time the group has visited the Cornerstone Children's Home and they want to get to know the staff and children. "We want to learn about their culture and hear from them what they need and want," Chisum said. The six women will fly from San Francisco to Entebbe, Uganda, via London.

They will then switch to a much smaller plane for the final leg of the journey to Nimule. They plan to leave Salinas on Oct. 14 and be home on Oct. 27. Steiner said that while in South Sudan she'll be giving adoption officials a sealed packet with information they need to move forward.

Although she would like to bring Dorine home with her, she doesn't expect that to be possible quite yet. The women won't be travelling light. They are allowed extra bags because of the humanitarian nature of their trip and plan to fill them with clothing and school supplies. Scott said in preparation for the visit the women have all been reading "When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor and Yourself," by Steven Corbett and Brian Fikkert. Orphanage Continued from Page 20 A quote from Mother Teresa provided the inspiration for the group's name.

Ginger Steiner, Michelle Chisum and Jackie Scott, three of the founders of the They Are One, said the quote explains the importance of loving and helping one person at a time. "I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the individual," explained Mother Teresa. "I can only love one person at a time just, one, one, one. So you begin." Sitting in Scott's Toro-area home, the women explained the goal of They Are One is to empower the orphans of Ni-mule, one by one. Why focus on an orphanage halfway around the world? Steiner's husband, Larry, traveled to Nimule (in what was then Sudan) in 2009 with other Central Coast residents.

The group's goal during their three-week stay was to help build a security fence around the orphanage. Steiner said her husband "really connected" with a 7-year-old girl he met on the trip, and the couple is in the process of adopting her. The Prunedale couple has three young daughters of their desire to create a long-term relationship with the orphanage, Steiner discovered that other Central Coast residents also wanted to pitch in and help. Meeting with the Esther Juma, the wife of the founder of the Cornerstone Children's Home, the women realized the orphanage, which has a staff of 14 and cares for about 67 young people, had a long list of needs. Steiner said the group came away with three areas they wanted to focus on.

"We want to involve our community in the existing sponsorship program for the children, establish a long-term relationship with the orphanage, which would involve yearly trips to the home, and help create an aging out program," Steiner said. "Aging out" is a reference to designing a program that would help youngsters eventually find their way in society. "We are looking at the possibility of teaching the older children a trade or helping them set up vendor stalls at the local markets," Chisum explained. "This would involve sending teachers over along with raising money for the supplies that would be needed." With a game plan now in place, six of They Are One's 13 members are planning to visit the children's home in October. Chisum, a San Benancio resident, own and they hope Dorine will be a part of their family by year's end.

Because Nimule is now in the new country of South Sudan, created just over a year ago, the Steiners are breaking ground in the adoption process. They have been told they are the first foreign couple to adopt a child in the country and thus it is taking longer to do the paperwork than it might normally.
