Ralph, who recently turned 92, was tickled pink, to say the least.

About 25,000 people had graduated from the school an institution that trained enlisted personnel during wartime efforts in order for them to gain commission as officers and Faulkner was selected from among those who still are living. "Was I excited? You bet!" he said, his voice ending at an enthusiastic pitch over the phone. Later, during an interview in the living room of his South Salem home, with his wife, Beverley, sitting nearby and dirty. "We didn't tell them that when they signed on," said Patton, the board chairwoman. The 16-person board includes current and former hospital patients, and staffers, along with local preservationists such as Patton, who was instrumental in helping preserve portions of the old Building and secure National Register of Historic Places status for the entire 144-acre Salem campus.
