8 8 8 A 12 APRIL 1992 SHECER THE SUNDAY AGE SPORT ACHIEVENS A 9020 28 Numbers are falling in Olympic's favor By Laurie Schwab ACTS and figures, for A what point to they Sydney are worth, Olympic winning the national soccer league finals series that starts today. Matches on the opening day are between Olympic and defending champion South Melbourne Hellas at Parramatta Stadium, and Adelaide City and Wollongong City at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide. Olympic was unbeaten in the last 11 rounds of the home-and-away series. Isolating matches between the five teams in the finals, Olympic has the best record, with five wins, two draws and two losses. Olympic also has the best finals record, having played 22 finals games almost twice as many as Hellas, its SYDNEY OLYMPIC Strongest team: Meier Zelic Bernal, Hooker Barrett, Lee, Phillips, Ironside, Retenes Saad, Bredbury.

Malor achievements: S.F.C• 1989-90 league champion, 1986 and 1984 runner-up; 1985 and 1983 National Cup winner, 1989-90, and runner-up. Finals record (played 22, won 14, lost 8, 37:28 goals): 1889-90: Adelaide City 2-1 (Lee 2), SM-Hellas 1-0 (Edwards), Melbourne Croatia 2-1 (Ironside, Saad), grand final Marconi 2-0 (Edwards, Ironside). 1000: St George 0-1, Melbourne Croatia 3-2 (Edwards, Saad, Koch), St George 1-0 (Saad), grand final Marconi 0-1. 1088: Marconi 1-3 (Patalis). Northern Division Marconi 2-1 (Phillips pen, Soper), Sydney Croatia 4-3 (Soper 2, Phillips pen, Johnstone), divisional grand final St George 3-2 (Phillips, Soper, Kalantzis), national final Adelaide City 1-0 (Dakos) and 1-3 (Johnstone) lost on aggregate 2-3.

1965: Northern Division St George 1-0 (Lambropoulos), Marconi 3-3 (Soper, Pollas, Zirvas) lost on penalties 6-7. 1904: Northern Division Marconi 2-1 (Phillips, Koussas), Sydney Hakosh 1-1 (Katholos), lost on penalties 2-4, APIA 3-0 (Raskopoulos, Kalantzis, Patikas), divisional grand final Sydney Hakosh 2-1 (Soper Coady), national final SM-Hellas 1-2 (Koussas) and 1-2 (Theodorakopoulos) lost 2-4 on aggregate. It is the eighth time in the league's 16 seasons that the championship is being decided by a finals series. In the other years, the title went to the team that finished first at the end of the home-and-away series. Wollongong is the worst performed of the finalists, with a record of one win, three draws and four losses against the other four and a finals record of two losses from two games. Surprisingly, the record of the minor premier, Melbourne Croatia, is only marginally better than Wollongong's. In games this season against the other four finalists, Croatia has won two, drawn two and lost six.

Of 10 finals matches, it has won only four. Running second to Olympic on these figures is Adelaide City, followed by Hellas. Olympic's Robbie Ironside, promises to be the match-winner on Sunday unless Hellas coach Ferenc Puskas assigns Paul Wade to watch him. Last time they met, Olympic beat Hellas 3-1 at Hellas' Middle Park Stadium. Hellas will hope that this time Olympic's goalkeeper, Gary Meier, will not be quite as stubborn.

The match is likely to break the deadlock between the league's joint top scorers, Kimon Taliadoros (Hellas) and Tim Bredbury (Olympic), who have 15 goals each. Taliadoros might have taken the lead had he not been suspended from the last few games of the home-and-away series. But if there is to be a match-winner for Hellas, it probably will be Paul Trimboll in attack or Mike Peter- MELBOURNE CROATIA 1009: Preston Makedonia 2-0 (Milosevic, Adzic), Sydney Olympic Strongest team: 2-3 (Awaritefe, Adzic). Another feature of the match will be the rival defensive partnerships of Croatia's Ned Zelic-Andrew Bernal and Hellas' Mehmet DurakovicSteve Blair.

To beat either of them requires genius or luck. For Hellas, much will depend on Puskas' team selections. Since Olympic plays with twin strikers, Bredbury and Abbas Saad, it would be wise to use Paul Fernandes alongside Blair as a second stopper. The winner of the OlympicHellas match will meet Melbourne Croatia the following weekend. The loser will play the winner of tomorrow's Adelaide City-Wollongong game.

The grand final will be a one-off match, even if the contestants are from different cities. In previous years, finalists from different cities were given home-and-away legs. ON 16 O-ONONN ONOMONN ONONNE PROVISIONAL 1 101010101010 0 DID 1 MCGUINNESS scored 69 for Hawthorn in the Victorian Women's Cricket Association final against Buckley Ridges more than half its final total of 133 and the only batsman to reach double figures.

But it was not enough to topple the reigning premier, which had made 148. Since the Christmas break, McGuinness, 22, who is severely hearing impaired, has scored 85, 75 and 52 and has been selected in the Australian under-23 squad. She went in to bat after Hawthorn lost two wickets in the first over, ending day one at and was solid throughout. McGuinness had to use a runner later in the innings because of a very swollen knee and was run out, with Hawthorn needing only 15 runs to win. McGuinness has been a state representative and a member at Hawthorn for the past seven years.

Her only premiership, despite a long cricketing career, was with Bentley's C- side. McGuinness credits the Victorian Institute of Sport, where she is a scholarship-holder, for her improved batting. Recently she played with a VIS squad in an exhibition oneday game in Ballarat. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS DANNI DI TORO was a finalist at the wheelchair championships late last month, despite limited preparation because of year-12 studies at St John's Regional College in Dandenong. She was one of eight women and 16 men invited to play.

DI Toro, 17, successfully defended her Australian title at the National Tennis Centre in February. As the top seed, ranked three in the world, she defeated the world No. 4, Ellen De Lang, of Holland, 6-2 7-6 in the final. Di Toro, an MLC junior sports scholarship holder, played in a national competition in Adelaide last week. She plans to compete in the French and Dutch opens.

She will be vying for selection in the Australian team for the Paralympics in September. CRICKET TIM ALBON helped Burwood break a 23- year premiership drought in senior turf cricket when it won the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association final against St Kevins Old Boys. Burwood scraped into fourth spot with the final home-and-away game, then beat top side Ashburton in the semi-final. Albon, a -arm fast bowler, had (11 overs nine maidens) at the end of day one after Burwood had declared at At the end of St Kevins' first innings he had off 19 overs, and by the end of the match he nad taken 10 wickets for 33. St Kevins was all out for 39 in the first innings and 125 in the second.

CRICKET CHRISTOPHER TREWIN will be hoping his form with the bat this season is translated to the football field. The 16-year-old Ballarat High School student played with North Ballarat's under-16 and senior A-grade teams in the Ballarat association. He finished with averages of 74 and 30 respectively, a premiership at under-16 and a semifinalist in his first grade season. Trewin's Saturdays were devoted to cricket: he played in the juniors from 8.30 am and in the seniors from 1 pm-6 pm. Trewin's uncle and state representative, Tom Trewin, and cricketing father, Jeff, introduced him to the game when he was five.

This season he scored two centuries in juniors and a highest score of 59 not out in seniors. He was the only boy from Ballarat to play in the under-16 state team against the ACT in Melbourne. Trewin has played three seasons of country-week cricket and represented Essendon in the Dowling Shield. He has won two junior batting- awards and this season also won two senior awards encouragement and best finals player (he made 43). Trewin, a 188-centimetre centre half-forward, won the goal-kicking award for North Ballarat juniors last season with a tally of 75.
