I am very scared In the dark and mum and dad miss you very much." Karly, aged nine, had written "I wake up all the time. I need you Karmein. Please bring Karmein back We miss you very much with our hearts." As time dragged on, police fears Increased.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Holliday said on 20 April: "Quite obviously, the longer the time, the greater our concern. Now we are approaching a week, we have grave concerns." But the obvious distress of the family failed to reach the heart of the kidnapper. The State Government offered a $100,000 reward. Announcing it, the Premier, Mrs Kirner, said: "The crime has sent Shockwaves through the community. Everyone Is hoping for the immediate release of Karmein, and I hope this reward will lead to an end to this horrific crime and prevent further occurrences." But the money, hundreds of pieces of information from the public and a massive police door-knock through Templestowe failed to secure her release.

There were hopes that Karmein would be released before the end of the school holidays on 29 April. The man In charge of the Investigation, Detective-Inspector David Sprague, said he spoke daily to the Chan family. On 28 April, the day before the school term started again, he said: "They hold their hopes as I do, and they are trying to cope with what must be a parent's worst and most unimaginable trauma." It wax almost a year to the day when, barefoot and dressed In a short white nightie, Karmein Chan, 13, was abducted from her home In Templestowe. It was about 8.30 pm on a Saturday night, 13 April 1991. It was the first day of the school holidays and Karmein had been babysitting her two younger sisters, aged nine and seven, while her parents worked in their Chinese restaurant.

The girls' father, John, had left the house only about an hour before the kidnapper broke In. The kidnapper, wearing a balaclava, was armed with a large knife. He locked the two younger girls In a cupboard In a bedroom. He apparently tried to cover the motives for his attack by spray-painting the family car with the slogans "payback" and "more to Sniffer dogs picked up a scent that led to a nearby road where police believe the man had a getaway car parked. Police Immediately suspected the kidnapper could have been the same man who abducted Sharon Wills In Ringwood in 1988.

She was hfld for 18 hours, assaulted and damped in early in the morning, wearing only a green garbage bag. Hi had already been dubbed "Mr Cruel" Two years later he Is believed to been responsible for the kid- naplng of a Canterbury schoolgirl, Nicola Lynas. She was released aver 50 hours. She was also and thrown from a car, wearing a blanket. After Karmein was abducted, ptlice urged the public to visit rojen who they knew lived on their own, to make sure they were not hiding a terrified schoolgirl a young girl who was on medication for glandular fever and an asthmatic.

But It was not only Karmein who was terrified. Her two sister were initially too shocked to help police try to find the older sister they adored. And her distressed mother, Phyllis, offered to exchange herself to the kidnapper for the safe return of Karmein. Three days after the abduction, John and Phyllis Chan publicly pleaded for the release of their daughter. Sobbing and holding Karmein's favorite green sweatshirt close to her side, Mrs Chan said: "Please, release my daughter.

All the family love her. Karmein, your sisters need you. Don't spoil my family. Take my daughter home safe." Mr Chan said his wife had not been able to sleep or eat in the days after the abduction. He said: "We hope the man understands and will release her as soon as possible so we can have the family together." The distressed Mrs Chan said: "She loves her sisters and ber mum and dad.

I love her really very much. Karmein, I can't miss you any more." A week after the abduction, the family again tried to win back Karmein by appealling directly to her kidnapper. On 23 May, Mrs Chan again appealed to the kidnapper in the hope that Karmein would be released in time for a sister's birthday. This time she wrote: "I beg you to release my daughter Karmein Immediately I am willing to offer my life in exchange for Karmein's release." A month latter, without Informing police, Mrs Chan included a Term started with prayers for' Karmein by students and staff at her school, Presbyterian Ladles' College, while police shifted through list of 130 people they believed capable of kidnapping children. Still filled with hope for her daughter's return and the despair and pain of her abduction, Mrs Chan wrote directly to the kidnapper on 1 May, pleading with him to set Karmein free.

The letter, addressed to "Mr read: "We miss Karmein 1 very, very much. Please let Karmein go. We know you are a caring person. We hope Karmein Is safe with you Thank you for letting her free. And we can rebuild our lives.

Please hear our plea?" On May, It was reported that police believed Karmein had been murdered. The bunt continued. A police Information leaflet was coded post office box number In another letter in the hope that the abductor would write directly to her. She said that only Karmein could decipher the code.
