Several other players who missed extensive time during the team's minicamp and summer school were expected to pass their physicals but be limited to one practice per day at the start of camp. Coach Tony Dungy described holding out Sanders as "precautionary." "Our thought is to be more conservative than not and get ready for the long haul," he said. Sanders expects to miss about two weeks.

He underwent a pair of surgical procedures after appearing in his first Pro Bowl in February, including one to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. A team with Super Bowl aspirations will be nearly at full strength when it takes to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology practice fields today. The only impediments to the Indianapolis Colts' latest championship drive as they reported to training camp Sunday were: Continuing surgery rehabilitations that will keep Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders (shoulder) and second-round draft pick Tim Jennings (foot) off the practice fields for the early portion of camp.

The absence of linebacker Freddie Keiaho, a third-round pick and the only member of the seven-player draft class still unsigned. He-lio Castroneves' biggest climb Sunday at Michigan International Speedway came in the Indy Racing League's point standings. The Brazilian used a victory in the rain-delayed Firestone Indy 400 to move past two others into the series lead with three races left in the season. Castroneves has never won an IRL championship, but he can feel one within his grasp this year.

"Leaving here with the points lead gives the team even more of a boost," he said after holding off Vitor Meira by 1.6229 seconds and climbing the track's fence in typical Spider-Man fashion. The victory was Castroneves' series-high fourth of the season and the 11th of his IRL career. He also gave team owner Roger Penske his 22nd IRL victory tying An-dretti Green Racing for the all time lead. It was the team's first win at Michigan since Rick Mears captured a CART race in 1991. Castroneves took the points lead because the two former frontrunners experienced problems.

Sam Horn-ish who entered the race with a 25-point lead over Scott Dixon, retired on lap 62 with an overheated engine. Hornish finished last in the 19-car field and fell to second in the standings, eight points behind Castroneves. Dixon's problem came during the first caution period, when Marty Roth slowed on the track. Dixon's See Castroneves, Page D6 FIRESTONE INDY 400 (Top finishers) Driver 1. Helio Castroneves 2.

So what did Polian think of Wayne's attire? Remember, Polian didn't quite find the humor in Mike Vanderjagt's post-playoff appearance with David Let-terman. Creatively funny, he was asked, or offensive? "That's funny," he said. Well, if anybody knows funny, it's the Colts' team president.

State's top player gets even better Brittany Kelly sets her sights on girls state title for Hamilton SE By Mike Rasor mike.rasor(3indystar.com At the end of the 2005 girls golf season, Brittany Kelly of Hamilton Southeastern was arguably the best returning high school player in the state. She has improved since then.

"I'm starting to hit my irons exactly how I want to. I'm hitting my woods great," said Kelly, a senior who made an oral commitment to Ball State University last week. "It's all starting to come together right before the season." Hamilton Southeastern's season begins today with a home match against Anderson. She decided she also will play soccer this fall, meaning the honor student could have less time on the practice range. Kelly last played soccer in junior high. She was so good then that Royals coach Greg Davidson recruited her before this season, even though she hadn't played in a few years. "He said I'm the starting goalie when I can be there," Kelly said. Golf still comes first.

That was the promise she made to her father, Ken Kelly, who is the girls golf coach at Carmel. "The discussion was, everything goes for golf," Brittany said. "Golf always comes first. Soccer is just a fun little background thing." Ken Kelly has always been there to provide advice during his daughter's development. Before she could swing, Brittany often accompanied her parents and grandparents on the course, picking up the game much like Tiger Woods.
