San Francisco Fed President Janet Yellen said that while market turmoil has the potential to hurt the economy, rate policy should not be used to shield investors from losses. Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher said the economy appears to be "weathering the storm," and Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart said investors should consider the unemployment report in the context of mostly strong retail sales reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 14.47, or 0.11 percent, to 13,127.85. Broader indexes fell. The Standard Poor's 500 index slipped 1.85, or 0.13 percent, to 1,451.70, and the Nasdaq composite index declined 6.59, or 0.26 percent, to 2,559.11. Light, sweet crude for October delivery rose 79 cents to $77.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The dollar slipped against most other major currencies, while gold prices extended their gains.

Associated Press NEW YORK Wall Street finished a volatile session mixed Monday as investors grappled with the possibility that the Federal Reserve might not lower interest rates as much as they hope. The stock market ratcheted up and down throughout the day, with Wall Street still nervous after Friday's dismal employment report. The data, which showed the first monthly decline in jobs in four years, rekindled fears about housing and credit market weakness bleeding into the overall economy. INDIANAPOLIS The Finish Line said Monday it has hired Moelis Advisors to provide financial and capital markets advice three months after agreeing to buy Genesco for $1.5 billion. Moelis is a unit of Mercanti Securities.

On Aug. 30, the Indianapolis-based shoe and apparel retailer said it was disappointed with Genesco's second-quarter results and would be evaluating its options. Tennessee-based Genesco, known for its Journeys and Hat World franchises, had a net loss of $4.17 million, or 19 cents a share, missing analysts' estimate of 30 cents a share. Moelis served as an adviser to Hilton Hotels in its sale to Blackstone Group. (Bloomberg) Distillery buyer plans U.S.

However, analysts say the real growth potential is on the planning side. That's where Aprimo is stronger. Its software gives companies an alternative to using computer programs like Microsoft Excel to build databases and track market research. "It's an early market," said Ragha-van Sarathy, an analyst with Ferris, Baker Watts.

"That part of the market is growing faster." Aprimo's customers include Bank of America, Nestle, Toyota and Warner Brothers. It has about 250 employees in offices throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The company's headquarters is on Indianapolis' Northeastside. Call Star reporter Erika D. Smith at (317) 444-6424.

fractured that analysts have a tough time assigning a dollar figure to it. But they say it's growing. "Over the next five to 10 years, there will be a more rapid rate of adoption," said Terry Tillman, an analyst with SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. Companies are looking for ways to simplify their marketing efforts because it is getting tougher for them to reach customers. Companies have to consider everything from the Web to direct mail to text messaging to e-mail.

There also are legal concerns, such as the Do Not Call List for telemarketing. What enterprise marketing management software does is speed up the process of planning a marketing campaign and executing it. Aprimo's largest competitor is Massachusetts-based Unica which is predicting revenue of $100 million this year. By comparison, Aprimo reported revenue of $52 million in 2006. Aprimo offers an alternative to programs like Microsoft Excel.

It also means there will be local stockholders making money and hopefully using that money to start more tech companies. "(The IPO) creates the turn that you need to create the wealth to turn around and create the companies," Hill said. Aprimo was founded in 1998 by former executives of locally run Software Artistry, which was sold to IBM that year.

Aprimo is one of the largest makers of enterprise marketing management software.
