And while business leaders acknowledge Thompson's need to get labor's support in the voting booth, they still suspect him of being too cozy with unions. The mansion beer reception didn't help matters. A recent open bar, filet-and peas bash at the mansion -for top business leaders worked some minor miracles.

Illinois State Chamber of Commerce's Les Brann Jr. behind his trips to Washington. Act Five: How to succeed in business without really trying Miffed business leaders last summer threatened to cut back on their traditional, sizeable campaign contributions to Thompson. They were angered that only threats of stiff federal penalties could spur Thompson into seeking an end to a bitter, business-labor war over jobless pay reform last spring. They still are not fond of his Analysis seemed to forgive Thompson lor some past sins in a recent chamber newsletter.

Act Six: Election Day While it's a long way before the final curtain, few serious hecklers have tried to interrupt Thompson's performance. Former Democratic Gov. Daniel Walker, who is seeking his party's bid to challenge Thompson, has been a vocal exception. Walker's chances of being slated for governor, however, appear slim. ing some surprise stops in the offices of Chicago's top business writers.

Thompson took pen in hand for a few guest columns to tell readers that business not politics was community grants. The news was of marginal significance but the treatment of it by Thompson's office was one of many suspected attempts to bolster the troubled image carrying a cassette tape with the governor's remarks. Much of it is repetitious of pre-departure comments. And while there's no harm in his travels if Illinois' interests are, indeed, best served, Thompson has been widely criticized for overdoing it a bit. Act Two: In the field with Jim Being a politician and an effective campaigner, Thompson has rarely resisted political workouts in the pre-election season.

Thompson JOXUled at pumping handsT chitchatting with strangers and otherwise making his presence known. One Of Ihe best places to do that in the fall is at a football game. Such games have huge, informal, built-in audiences. And most people watching university football games in this state aren't expecting any on-field miracles. Their attention can be diverted easily.

At the recent Northern Illinois University homecoming game, Thompson shared some beer, schnapps and blackberry brandy with celebrating student fans. The display got him some flak from potential Democratic challengers but brought his Potomac-preened image back to II-'linois. Western Illinois University students, not to be outdone, purchased two pewter beer steins for Thompson. Act Three: Trouble brews victory Such football-field frolics are part of his campaign repertoire. He has often found imbibing a bit with potential foes helpful.

He turned, iJiuge, anti-Thompson labor rally last summer into a political plus when he asked several hundred sweating, rallying rank-and-file union members to the executive mansion for 82 kegs of beer on him. The brew bill es-timated at several thousand dollars came out of campaign warchests. Act Four: Citizen SPRINGFIELD, 111. (UPIL- Lights, camera, action! Jim Thompson is at it again. The two-term Republican governor is renowned for his campaign style.

As the 1982 election season nears, let's look at how he grabs the spotlight. Act One: Mr. Thompson goes to Washington. Since Ronald Reagan took office in January, Thompson has shuttled to Capitol Hill and back 16 times spending a total of-nearly a month of the last 10 hob-nobbing around Washington. "Each time he goes to Capitol Hill, it's to preserve Illinois' best interests," said Thompson press aide James Skilbeck.

"And each time he goes, it's usually for three or four purposes at a time," Perhaps the most significant purpose is political. Most times that Thompson goes to Washington, his press aides walk into the Statehouse press room 0 a Certairifeed (fl) wolohart 0CC0B6R LUMBER CO. WIU police Capt. Harold Thompson said warnings posted at Western's stadium prohibiting alcoholic beverages are "a technicality everybody does it. It's a case where we let people carry it in, but we don't want anyone drinking to excess where we'd have a bunch of drunks in the stands." At WIU Saturday, the governor waded into the crowd with university president Leslie Malpass with about six minutes to go in the half. He was greeted by the "Peach Blossoms," the Western Vets Club, which dresses in women's clothes for home games and MACOMB, ILL. James R. Thompson was at it again this past weekend. Making good his pre-game promise to join "all you party, animals at halftime," the governor sipped peppermint schnapps from a toilet plunger and was kissed by a bearded female impersonator named "Candie" as he toured the stands at Western Illinois University's homecoming Saturday. The governor came under fire last week when former Gov. Daniel Walker called Thompson "irresponsible" for drinking with students in the stands at the Northern Illinois University homecoming the Oct.

The governor also was rewarded with a kiss from a bearded "Peach Blossom" named Candie, leaving a lipstick stain on his cheek. Thompson continued his walk through the crowd, signing students' arms and clothes when asked and basking in cheers of "J-T, J-T, J-T" and "Way to go, Jim." As he was leaving the stands, members of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, which annually sponsors a tricycle race, asked the governor to help, them present a check for $1,000 to senior citizens. Thompson said he was so impressed with their spirit of volunteerism that he would match their check with a $1,000 check of his own. Earlier, the governor attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a coal conversion project at WIU and said the money saved on fuel costs resulting from the project can be spent on faculty salaries and programs. The $4.7 million plant was scheduled to be operational by July 1983 and was expected to save $1.2 million in its first year.

About 150 Hiram Walker assembly line workers picked up their last paychecks Friday.

The company, which is moving the plant to Fort Smith, has laid off some 400 workers in the last four weeks. Hiram Walker announced two years ago it was making the move, in part because of what it said were unfavorable worker compensation laws in Illinois.
