THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR INDYSTAR.COM 2nd MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2009 B5 TEAM-BY TEAM SELECTIONS 6th-round pick Painter faces steep climb on depth chart "Jim is our backup quarterback," he said. "Curtis is not going to beat him out as a rookie, that's for sure." Painter was an all-state quarterback at Vincennes Lincoln High School before moving on to Purdue. There, he was welcomed to the team by senior QB Kyle Orton. He learned the ropes from Orton, just as he will from Manning and Sorgi. Painter was expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft before he endured an injury-plagued senior season.

He and the Boilermakers struggled, finishing 4-8. "The one thing I've tried to stress through this whole process is I had a lot of experience," said Painter, who started 41 games and appeared in five others. "My senior season was a rough one for all of us, but there were a lot of things we did well in the previous seasons." Call Star reporter Mike Chappell at (317) 444-6830. "I don't think you can ask for a better situation as far as getting in there and learning behind some great guys." Purdue's Curtis Painter on joining QBs Peyton Manning, Jim Sorgi where to take Curtis Painter because we really felt strongly that he had an opportunity to develop and become a good quarterback," team president Bill Polian said. "It's rare that we find a quarterback who has the stature and the arm strength and the intelligence to come in here and handle this offense out of the collegiate level, but he clearly has." But Polian said Painter's arrival isn't a signal the team is unhappy with Sorgi.

By Mike Chappell mike.chappellindystar.com The welcoming committee at the Indianapolis Colts' West 56th Street complex for Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter includes two figures who will impede his path to the playing field. But if Painter was distressed by joining a depth chart that includes Peyton Manning, a three-time league MVP, and veteran backup Jim Sorgi, he did a good job of hiding it Sunday afternoon. "I don't think you can ask for a better situation as far as getting in there and learning behind some great guys," he said after the Colts selected him in the sixth round of the NFL draft. "It will be fun. It's a great opportunity." Painter was the 12th quarterback taken in the draft, the eighth selected on Sunday.

He's the first chosen by the Colts since they took Sorgi in the sixth round in 2004. "We thought long and hard about Kravitz COLTS' SUNDAY PICKS JERRAUD POWERS Round 3, 92nd overall. School: Auburn. Position: Corner-back. Size: 5-10, 192.

School: Brigham Young. Position: Wide 'i different kinds of training he did, and the NFL lifestyle." If there's anything else you need to know about this kid, consider this: During the weeks leading up to the draft, he was reading hundreds of essays from South Jersey area high school football players who wanted to attend his first-ever Donald Brown Player-to-Player Leadership Conference. The idea was to speak to young football players about what to expect and how to handle life on and off the field at the next level. Me? If I was two weeks from getting chosen in the first round, I'd be picking out my sweet new ride. Turns out, Brown is also something of a health nut, which won't be terribly good news for the Steak Shake people.

He reads books like "Mind Gym: An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence." He studies kinesiology, which is the science of human movement. At some point, I'm guessing he's going to ask Anthony Gonzalez to hook him up with a hyperbaric chamber. At the risk of aging myself, you know who he reminds me of? A former Ohio State and NFL running back named Robert Smith. More than 20 years ago, I attended a news conference when he announced his intention to go to Ohio State, more for the medical school than the football program, and I was utterly blown away by his intelligence and maturity. The bigger picture on this draft? Give the Colts a like that means anything.

They got two 300-pound tackles, trading up to get the first one, USC's Fili Moala. They added a wide receiver in the fourth round. They added major depth to running back and got some help at cornerback. In the seventh round, they got a punter. They still don't have a kick- and punt-returner and could use more depth at linebacker, but there's still collegiate free agency to address some of those needs.

In Brown, they got a very good football player who, if first impressions count, is just as fine a young man. Bob Kravitz is a columnist for The Indianapolis Star. Call him at (317) 444-6643 or e-mail bob.kravitzindystar.com. Listen to Bob and Eddie White 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WFNI 1070-AM.

Colts filled many needs, have some left to go. From B1 owner Jim Irsay on Saturday compared Brown to Thomas or possibly a rare first-round bust. This much, though, we know even before seeing the former UConn running back gain a single yard in the National Football League: This is one impressive young guy. If he's as good on the field as he appears to be off the field, the Colts are going to be happy beneficiaries. "After his sophomore year, I told him, 'I need you to get stronger and to show us you can run between the tackles, and not just said Frank Edgerly, who coached Brown at Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic.

"Nine out of 10 kids say, 'Yeah, sure, they give it lip service. Not him. "His mom and dad got him a strength coach and a speed coach, he got on a nutrition program, and he hasn't looked back since. "You've got to understand, this is a kid who chose UConn for its kinesiology program; it was going to either be UConn or Virginia. So even then, he was thinking well beyond football at an early age.

He has that maturity to go with his vision." Brown claims Tiki Barber as a role model, both on and off the field, and that's not a bad place to start. Giants fans soured a bit on Barber at the end when he was seen as a clubhouse lawyer, but when you consider the whole package, the tremendous career and the seamless transition to a post-football media career, that's a pretty good person to emulate. Brown sat and spoke to Barber a bit more than two weeks ago. "I grew up a Giants fan and a big Tiki Barber fan, so it was a great experience being able to sit down and learn some things from him," said Brown, whose agent, James Crimmins, set up the meetings. "Just the different things I'll come across in an NFL career.

It included West Virginia's Pat McAfee, expected to succeed Smith as punter and holder on placements, and Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter. "We've certainly had a productive two days," said Jim Caldwell, involved with his first draft as the Colts head coach. "We wanted to be able to go in and run the ball a little better and then also be able to stop the run. "I think we certainly put ourselves in position to do that." Here's a capsule look at how the Colts fared in the draft: Numbers game: Polian evaluates players with his eyes how they play not by becoming preoccupied with their statistics. But there's nothing wrong with the stats of running back Donald Brown, the team's first-round pick, and Collie.

Brown led the nation in rushing last season (2,083 yards), Collie in receiving yards Some critics might downplay Collie's gaudy statistics because he played at pass-happy BYU. Collie begged to differ. "No matter what the system is a receiver who has over 15 hundred yards and over a hundred catches, I think that takes a pretty talented receiver," he said. There's the beef: On one weekend, Indy achieved something it failed to do in the previous 11 Polian-led drafts. Twice, in fact.

It drafted a pair of 300-pound defensive tackles. USC's Fili Moala tips the scales at 303, Michigan's Terrance Taylor at 319. Taylor becomes the heftiest player on defense. Highlights: Do-everything player for Mountaineers. Handled punting, field goals, PATs and kickoffs.

Set school records for most games played (51), points (384) and PATs (210). Second in field goals made (58) Connected on 58-of-79 field-goal attempts and averaged 43.7 yards on 126 career punts. Also registered 57 touchbacks on Cornering the market: Powers is the fifth cornerback taken in the first three rounds since 2005. The others: Dante Hughes (round 3 in '07), Tim Jennings (round 2 in '06), Marlin Jackson (round 1 in '05) and Hayden (round 2 in '05). Either the team is concerned with the development of Hughes, who has yet to start in two seasons, and Jennings, or it believes you never can have too many cornerbacks on the roster.

Also, Jackson will be a free agent at the end of the season. No 'backers: For only the second time in the 12 Polian-directed drafts, the team did not select a linebacker. The only other 'backer-less draft was in 2001. Polian described this year's linebacker class as "very thin." He expected to sign a couple of undrafted rookie linebackers late Sunday remember Gary Brackett in 2003? and didn't rule out re-signing Freddy Keiaho, the team's two-year starter who remains on the open market. That's a kick: To acquire the 13th pick in the seventh round used to select McAfee, Indy sent Philadelphia its 2010 sixth-round pick.

The last West Virginia kicker with the Colts? Mike Van-derjagt. Make out of that what you will. Call Star reporter Mike Chappell at (317) 444-6830. JAIMIE THOMAS Round 7, 236th overall. School: Maryland.
