ILLINOIS Raya Garbousova To Play For Hometown Audience Famed cellist Raya Garbousova of DeKalb will be featured soloist with the "Northern Illinois University Symphony Orchestra in a Sunday, March 24, performance before a "hometown" audience. International audiences as far away. as East.

Africa have heard the outstanding cellist who makes her home here. Mme. Garbousova will join Rolland. Johnson, conductor of the Madison (Wis.) Civic Orchestra as special guest of the 3 p.m. concert at Northern's University Center Ballroom.

The performance will be open to the public without charge. No tickets are required. A native of Russia, Mme. Garbousova has been an American citizen for years and now makes her home in DeKalb where her cardiologist husband, Dr. Kurt Biss, has his practice.

In addition to her performance schedule, the internationally known musician takes pride in her cooking and role as a hostess at the Biss residence at 524 W. Lincoln Hwy. She also takes a limited number of cello students in whom she takes pride, but is proudest of the two Biss sons who both are on the way to becoming professional musicians. Mme. Garbousova has been acclaimed in two dozen nations on four continents for her artistry, She debuted in Berlin, then played with all the major European orchestras, including apperances in Spain under the baton of master cellist Pablo Casals with his orchestra.

Most recently the famed cellist earned critical acclaim for her performance earlier this month with the Julliard String Quartet at Chicago's Orchestra Hall. Critics from Boston to Los Angeles have praised her work in terms such as "magical' performance," "one of the rare cellists of our time," and "The Queen of the Mme. Garbousova will join NIU Symphony Orchestra conductor and violinist Frank Beezhold in performance of Brahms' "Concerto for Violin and Violoncello in A minor, Op. Directing the NIU Symphony during the Brahms' work will be guest conductor Rolland Johnson, who will be making his first appearance with the NIU Symphony, has conducted previously with Mime. Garbousova as solist.

The past season she appeared with Johnson in perI formance of Dvorak's cello concerto. The guest conductor also directs opera productions and choruses in Madison. Johnson is a graduate of the Cincinnati (Ohio) Conservatory where he was a protege of Emile Hermann. The NIU Symphony concert will open under the baton of Beezhold with Nicolai's "Overture to 'The Merry Wives of Windsor" and Schubert's "Symphony in B. Minor, No.

DORTCH Missions Convention To Open 'Tomorrow A presentation by the of Teen Challenge in Chicago will be a highlight of the World Ministries Convention that will open tomorrow at Calvary ple in DeKalb. Other features include films and an all church potluck dinner. The Rev. Bob Schmidgall, director of "Invade," will open the special services as the first speaker, tomorrow at 7 p.m.| Calvary Temple in DeKalb was the first church established under the Invade concept.

Since its founding, there have been similar projects in Superfor, Lexington, and Naperville. Plans are now being developed for the founding of a church in LaGrange this mer. Invade seeks to employ methods similar to those used in the Book of Acts in the Bible in establishing new churches. A team of students has been recruited form Central Bible lege, Springfield, to work on the LaGrange project. The Rev.

Mr. Schmidgall is presently the pastor in ville. He is 4 graduate of Central Bible College. Speaker Friday evening at 7 is the Rev. Richard B.

Cunningham, who has been appointed to a three year term in Lome, Togo, West Africa. He will establish an advanced Bible school serving nine West African countries and also will be engaged in evangelistic work. A graduate of North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, the Rev. Mr. Cunningham pastored churches in Illinois for 11 years prior to attending the University of Utah, where he received his master's in education.

He recently completed work there toward a doctorate in edlucation. Woman Minister The Rev. Peggy A. Way, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, will be the midweek Lenten speaker tomorrow evening at the First Methodist Church. Her talk at 7 will be preceded at 6 by a potluck dinner for families of the church. "Renewal Through Faith and Action" will be the title of her talk.

Pastor's Wife Bases Theme On Queen Esther Mrs. Arnold: Larum. wife of the pastor of the Church of the Open Door, spoke at the two joint circle meetings of the Baptist Church on Tuesday. Mrs. Larum spoke of her native Norway and showed severher paintings.

She also gave a talk to the women, basing her theme on the Book of Esther. She challenged the women to look for ways that they, as women, can work: for God helping other women, children and youth to come to know God and the Christian way of life. 3, and met at the church Fellowship Hall for a noon potluck lunch, and Circles 2, 5, and 6 met in the evening for a potluck dinner. Stern Cancels NIU Performance; Violinist Szeryng Will Appear Violinist Henryk Steryng. whose performances have re ceived critical praise in 46 hations on five. continents, will present the seventh event on Northern Illinois University's Artist Series Monday, March 25.

The Polish-b-0 F.n musician; now a Mexican citizen, will present the NIU. concert at 8 p.m. in the University ConBallroom. Szervng will place violinist Isaac Stern, who was forced to cancel his NIU appearance due to illness. Free tickets for the Szeryng concert will be distributed to INTU students, racuity, and staff from 2 to 6 p.m.

Thursday and Friday, March 21 and 22, at the University Center ticket office. Tickets will be available to the public without charge at the same site Monday, March 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. Any tickets remaining will be available 30 minutes before the concert at the ballroom door. Born in Warsaw, Poland. Szeryng made, his first public appearance in his native city, and in Bucharest, Vienna, and Paris in 1933.

During World War II, he presented more than 300 performances for -Allieding servicemen and toured Central and South America. In 1946 he became a Mexican citizen and went on to be such a recognized proponent of that nation's music that he travels on a diplomatic passport. He has helped poputhe larize the work of Mexican com-led Elm- posers from Manuel M. Ponce in to Jimenez Mabarak. HENRYK Szeryng received the "Gran Prix du in 1955 for his recording of three Bach sonatas and three Partitas for violin alone.

He repeated as the award winner in 1957 for his record of the Second Prokofiev Vioin Concerto, then added third and fourth awards in 1960 and 1961 for the Brahms Concerto and then the Beethoven sonatas recorded with famed pianist Artur Rubenstein. In some areas, apples and grapefruit may be abundant also. According to legend, beef stroganoff is named for Serge Stroganoff, who was a chef for Catherine the Great of Russia. Catherine was a Prussian by birth but as a young woman, became interested in French cooking and later as a ruler urged chefs such as Stroganoff to bring more character to Russian tables. Here is a recipe tor the dish which I obtained from Henri Arnould, longtime, chef of the Colony the venerable Allerton Hotel on Chicago's North Michigan Avenue. You'll need 2 pounds of boneless beef sirloin.

Allow to come to room temperature. Remove fat and connective tissues. Slice the beef very thin inch at the thickest), which is one of the secrets for good stroganoff. Dredge slices in flour and brown quickly in 1 cup of butter. Reserve the browned beef.
