THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR WWW.INDYSTAR.COM Sports 2nd MOlM DAY, MAY 29, 2006 R7 INDY 500 'Almost5 doesn't cut it for Wheldon Andretti increased his career total to 430, moving past Mears to 10th on the all-time list. Hornish is the 18th winner from the pole and the sixth Team Penske driver to do it. He is the fifth Ohio native and first since Bobby Rahal in 1986. Hornish's 19 laps led is the fewest by a winner since 1995, when Jacques Villeneuve led 15. Despite the high temperatures, Honda had no engine failures.

This was Honda's first year supplying the full 33-car field. NHRA founder Wally Parks, 93, won the Bob Russo Award presented by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association at its annual breakfast Saturday at the Speedway. Scheckter crashed out for the third time in his five Indy starts and placed 27th. PDM's day ends early The inspiring tale of PDM Racing, which in two days pieced together a car from spare parts to get rookie Thiago Medei-ros onto the final spot on the grid, ended after just 24 laps with electrical problems. "I was definitely disappointed not to finish the race," said Me-deiros, who placed 31st. "That was our goal." Other than runner-up Marco Andretti, who won the Rookie of the Year Award hands down, it was not a good day for rookies. The other first-time starters were Bell, Arie Luyendyk Jr.

(28th) and P.J. Chesson (33rd). Etc. By leading four laps, Michael SAM RICHE The Star position he held for 10 laps, IT'S THE PITS: Tony Kanaan had to take fuel late in the race, giving up the No. 1 183-193, before finishing fifth.

He's led all five 500s in which he's raced. Dan Wheldon led early and often. Tony Kanaan led late. Both wound up Sunday as mere footnotes to the 90th Indianapolis 500. Wheldon's bid for a second consecutive victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ended with a tire puncture that forced him to pit out of sequence.

He settled for fourth. Kanaan, who led laps 183-193, had to pit for fuel and surrender the lead to teammate Michael An-dretti with seven laps to go. Kanaan placed fifth. For much of the day, Wheldon and his bright red Ganassi Racing car looked like an unbeatable combination. The Brit led five times for 148 of the race's 200 laps.

Just 65 laps into the race, he had put all but seven other cars a lap down. "It's the Indianapolis 500 and, boy, I hate to admit it, but I guess it's what makes the race so exciting. It's tough," Wheldon said. "It's just incredibly disappointing to lose a race like that." Kanaan wasn't mollified despite making a bit of Indy history. When he led lap 38, it marked the fifth consecutive year the Brazilian has led the race.

Rick Mears led six in a row (1979-84), but that streak started in his second race. Kanaan has led every 500 in which he has competed. "It doesn't matter," Kanaan said. "Everybody is going to see who won, and it was Sam Hornish so congratulations to him. "For sure, inside myself, I am 100 percent comfortable I gave everything I could.

If it was just under my control, I probably would have won today, but a lot of things have to fall in place together. So we will try it again and again and again, and one day, we'll get it." Four of the top seven finishers came from Kanaan's An-dretti Green Racing team, in- lowed. They wound up 24th through 26th. Carpenter builds resume After being upstaged most of the month by Vision Racing teammates Tomas Scheckter and Townsend Bell, Ed Carpenter was the best of the bunch Sunday when he placed 11th for the second year in a row. "We had a top-10 finish and that last yellow took us out," said Carpenter, stepson of team owner and Speedway CEO Tony George.

Tough day for ex-champs Wheldon could take some solace in faring better than the other five former winners in the field. Buddy Lazier (1996) and Eddie Cheever Jr. (1998) got the best out of what they had to place 12th and 13th, respectively.

"We had a good race car today," Lazier said, "but unfortunately, we didn't finish the race in the style we wanted." But at least he finished, which is more than could be said for Al Unser Jr. (1992, '94), Helio Castro-neves (2001-02) and Buddy Rice ('04). They all crashed out of the race, the most former champions to be eliminated by accidents since 1992, when five wrecked.
