BLACK WIDOW IS ABUNDANT Natural History Survey Officials Report Spider Population Crows URBAN 111. Dry weather of the past two years is suggest-1 ea by the Natural History Survey division of the Illinois Department of Registration and Education as a possible reason for the apparent increase in numbers of the black widow spider.

That the feared black widow is more abundant this year than normally is indicated by an unusually large number of reports received recently by the Natural History Survey. This poisonous spider is found through out Illinois but is miic'h morjF numerous in the southern half of the state than in the north ern half. "The bite of the black widow is quite serious, although most people who are bitten recover," according to Dr. Phillip W. Smith, associate taxonomist of the Natural History Survey.

"If we consider the abundance of this spider, the number" ot people bitten is remarkably small. This is partly because the spider -seems reluctant to bite unless excessively provoked and partly because it seldom corned in close contact with human beings. Living quarters for the black widow are usually under objects on dry ground, in dry outbuildings, or about house foundations. Ordinarily the interiors of homes or barns are not dry 1 enough to harbor the species. "The greatest danger of bites occurs when a person, in moving bricks, rocks, boards or trash, places his hand on a spider," Dr.

Smith- said. A first-aid measure, previous to treat- apt to harbor spiders. Improper labeling, ad vertising and invoicing and lack of candling certificates are the most numerous faults. The biggest problem now, Foreman said, is the need for in formation on candling at the point of first purchase from the producer. Many buyers who are candling need to know more about how to do it. According to a policy developed by the Division of Markets after consulting the Egg Law Enforcement Advisory Committee of the Illinois Poultry Industry Council, emphasis has been placed upon information and education. Foreman said, however, that beginning immediately increased emphasis will be placed on prosecutions, especially where dealers have been forewarned and still are found to be in violation.

The Illinois egg law requires that all eggs bought from farmers be candled at first purchase, and that all eggs sold at retail be labeled either by grade and size or as "ungraded." Other requirements of the law, or specific details of licensing or enforcement, can be obtained by writing the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Division of Markets, State Fairgrounds, Springfield. The black widow earned its name through its color and its rather gruesome habit of devouring its mate. It is distinguished from all other spiders by its shiny black body and a red mark shaped like an hour glass.

Legs and all, it is about an inch long, and on its back usually are one to three red dots or a red bar. Most apt to be mistaken for it is the common jumping spider, which is somewhat smaller and has a' hairy black body. Control for the black widow is difficult because of its habit of living in crevices or under objects. Recommended sprays are 2 per cent chlordane or 5 per" cent DDT in an oil base. Sprays should be applied under pressure into cracks and crev-ises or under objects that are ill Lvnn ljii lo vcrii.i a i.
