And the transcendental twitterings of the violin near the end, like the wingbeals of songbirds about a tranced St.

Francis, were no match for the accompanying grunts and growls from the insensitive orchestra. 1,500,000 KEEN, SWARTHY TONE Ferras evoked an unforset. table gypsy camp-fire atmosphere in the long unaccompanied incantations and rites at the beginning of "Tzigane." Here was keen and swarthy HO tone, with the authentic savagery in the stresses, a scent of hot blood and a hint of murder in the dark lit only by a sudden glitter of eyes, or earrings, or daggers. But, at that, my feeling was that the drama and the character of this music could all have been vivider, could all have struck deeper to heart. there could be no important questions about the Bach encore.

Here was classical playing of extraordinarily beautiful and tenuous tone, or maturely aristocratic temper, of incisive and electrifying technical certainty. The thoroughbred tautness of nerve in this Bach left me in OVERS no doubt that the Ferras recitals this week will be among the memorable musical events ol 1956. Thumpine noisiness, a hit-or miss attitude towards demands C.20 "Felicity" chair by Betta Chrome. for real virtuosity, and a seeming lack of care in the nrooor- tionina of Darts to each other. put the orchestral performances firmly among the worst I have ever heard from this orchestra.

The works included Proko fiev's "Classical" svmDhonv. which was grossly overblown in its big moments and mincing and niggling in the humour of its little ones, and Ibert's "Louisville' concerto, which foundered early for want of precision and nunojeness ot wit.
