VALLEY STATE SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2009 B7 THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC Vendors, crowds flock to Tempe Festival of Arts Still, Cieslikowski said he is hopeful that the large crowds at the festival Friday are a sign that people want to support the arts. Shawn Tsai said he would continue to create his glasswork figures regardless of income. If sales are down, he said he will cut back. This year, he will attend fewer festivals to save money. "I don't expect to make a million dollars, but if I survive doing what I love, that's good enough," he said.

While he may cut back, Tsai said he never considered not retail sales, sales tax and other items. Linda Meisinger of Sun Lakes decided to bring her sister Pam McQueary to the festival. McQuearyis visiting from Wyoming and calls herself an "eclectic art collector." She had already purchased three paintings, including a wa-tercolor of a cactus and a print of cartoon pandas for her granddaughter. "The pandas just made me smile," she said. "They made me happy so I bought it for my granddaughter." showing his work at the Tempe festival.

"I have built a lot of customers over the years," he said. "And I love it here. If like a carnival." The festival has grown in popularity. Last year's spring and fall festivals each attracted nearly 250,000 people. This year the festival organizers decided to allow a wider range of artists to show at the spring festival after getting nearly 700 applications for booths, said Casaundra Brown a spokeswoman for the Downtown Tempe Community Inc.

FESTIVAL Continued from Bl walkway of art. Adding to the entertainment are street performers, musicians, a wine tasting and jazz area, a kids play zone, food vendors, Mill Avenue shopping, eateries, a movie theater and more. While artists have to make a living, Cieslikowski explained that the majority of fine-art photographers, potters, painters, crafters, jewelers and other artists at the festival are driven by more than money. The non-profit manages the Mill Avenue District and organizes the festival. Brown said the buzz about large crowds the event draws and good sales at last year's fall festival spread in the arts community.

The artists are not the only ones who could see an economic boost from the festival. Based on last year's revenue, Brown said they are projecting the spring festival will have an economic impact of $11 million for Tempe. That number includes money spent on hotel bookings, OBITUARIES Moore, Steven "Stevie" 21. a Phoenix native, passed away on March 23. 2009 af To place a funeral announcement email your request to obitsiaipni.com (include your name, address and phone number) or go to azcentral.com, click on "Republic Classified place Deadline to place your notice is 12 noon Monday Saturday for next day's publication, and 12 noon Saturday for Monday's publication.
