It is not necessary that they match in texture though they must be of similar tex tural quality Attractive ones can be made at home 1 An interesting trend in table set ting seems to be the seating of three people on each side of the table and graving the ends open for decora tions ruit arrangements are popular to day To be most successful it is ad visable to use a large quantity of one kind of fruit and Just a few pieces of other fruits for centers of Interest The same principle applies for fruit arrangements as for flowers in that the" dark colors are placed low More flat fruit arrangements are used to day than tall ones lower arrangements for tables are different today A great many line arrangements are being used also lit tle scenes that look as though they might be reproductions' from a gar den They are interesting to look at Dorothy Biddle brought her instruc tive lecture to a close with this thought you decorate your living room you decorate for a long time but you can change the decora tion in your dining room every day by changing the center of interest the Of course it Is not to be denied that many people unfit their chil dren for life by being too Indulgent to There are mothers nnd fathers whose devotion to their children makes them blind to their faults so they do not correct them There are mothers and fathers who are so weak that they can deny thefr children nothing and who pamper and Indulge them tn even the thins that they know will be the undoing There are fathers and mothers who are so possessive that they never let their children grow up or learn to stand alone Mrs SalUe Luther is an operative patient at Danville Community Hos pital A Carmichael Passes at Keeling And Trust CuHcura To Help Have Your Completion Ready for the Coming Party You a faulty skin rob you of good times any longer With Cuticura Soap and Ointme nt you can take the first step today toward new skin loveliness Within a surpri ingly short time ou will notice a differ ence Pimples blackheads and other externally caused blemishes are re dull sallow skin begins to liven up Start today Buy BO1 11 Cuticura Soapand Ointment at your drurcist's Each 2'x cr REE simple write Cuticura Dept 93 Malden Mast A' Carmichael 65 died at the home of his son A Carmichael near Kentuck yesterday afternoon aft er an illness of 15 months uneral services will be conducted at thehome tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock A native of Pittsylvania County Mr Carmichael had spent practically all his life in the Kentuck section and was widely known throughout thecounty He is survived by his wife and ten children Mrs Slayton Carmichael and Carmichael all ot Chatham Carmichael Hali fax County Carmichael and Mrs Owen both of Cincinnati Ohio A Carmichael' Ringgold Mrs Brown Danville Mrs Slayton Sutherlin and Car michael Semora He also leaves one brother Jc CCatmichael of Leesburg Cand one half brother Dodson of Ringgold Eleven grandchildren also survive by hospital attendants Solon was critically injured in a collision between his motorcycle and an automobile at street Intersection her yesterday official returns from election were Shakespeare Study Club Meets Thursday At the regular meeting of the Shakespeare Study Club this week Mrs Walter Parker will view of one of the modem Mrs Harry Pritchett will to the club at her home Hills Thursday afternoon at four He say that his hild vvi left motherless when qulie young but instead showing tendcruc and pity to the poor little creature he never caressed her or petted her or said any word of attrition to her Instead he was deliberately negltfiil of her and indifferent to her He never praised her but wa quick to hlmie He only leward for good work wa being told that It should have been better To harden a child deliberately and to stamp out nil of the gentler emo tions la it to make it Incapable of pity because no sympathy has been shown it to dry up the springs of tenderness in it because it has known no tenderness is to do it not only a cruel spiritual but also a practical wrong Because it is still true that love makes the world go round that the men and women who are most human most considerate of others: most responsive to their fellow creatures are not only the happiest but the most successful in life Nobody loves a hard boiled stoic nor wants to do business with him or push his fortune Our services available to all regardless of financial circumstances of for hands and wrists Even car onion stains disappear rather when rubbed with a' small lemon One woman we know saves the lemon rind after But between the ovcifond patent and the Spartan parent there is medium in dealing with children Where they have both love and authority tenderness and duty and indulgences and restrictions 2 Unfortunately only too few fathers and mothers hit this happy medium or 'parenthood seems to be one of the things that Is most difficult to do in moderation DOROTHY DIX QUALITY gifts that ill go straight to the heart of every lucky recipient! In Table Dorothy Biddle well known editor author lecturer and judge of flower shows drew a large audience at the second of her scries of lectures being given under the auspices of the Gar den Club ot Danville in the Sunday School Auditorium of Main Street Methodist Church Her audience was conspicuous for the large group of out of town people The subject for the second lecture was In Table Setting" nnd the speaker gave her audience a new in considering this common household duty as an adven ture instead of a chore" In Introducing her subject she be gan with the art of table setting in ancient Greece about the time of Christ that great period of Greek de velopment of art She described the carved' table used in this period beautiful in itssim pliclty No covering was used on the table and couches were used ratherthan chairs The largest most domi nant most beautiful object on the table was always the salt cellar Per haps It was made of metal simply but beautifully designed Or it might have been made of carved wood There were no individual dishes but large' substantial bowls made of pottery' and beautifully enameled There were service bowls and smaller bowls There were glasses on the Greek table for the Egyptians had started to make glass long before this era There was no flat silver but there were large spoons on of the large ladle sometimes used in the kitchen today Men wore their knives in their belt Bread was used to clean' the knife after use Tt was also employed for wiping the fingers Basins of water were passed before and after the meals with a towel for drying the hands Dorothy Biddle with her delightful descriptions" then carried her au dience to Rome about a hundred years later Again one finds the bare table and couches but Tn Rome one was likely to find an air of grandeur The cushions on the couches were stuffed daily with fresh rose petals ruits from all parts of the known world' were 'piled on the table not for decoration however but for con sumption The salt cellar still the center of interest was even higher sometimes two feet tall and often studded with precious and semi precious stones' Spoons were also set with precious stones lowers were never used 'on the table for decoration blit the table near the ceiling a lattice was swung horizontally over which" piled rose petals Ropes at each made It possible for servants to slowly swing the lattice thereby causing the petals to drift down over the table and the diners And then coming to the present day characterized the loveli est table as being one with distinc tion 'that isbeauty allied to utility Before one is in a position to judge whether or not table has distlnc tion he must know for what meal it is set the type of home in which it is used and something of the color used in the surroundings irst comes utility then beauty A table to have distinction the speaker said must be appropriate If one has 'a typical 'dining room one "generally applicable to modern needs It will take a modern table setting Colored cloths are in demand today for the modern table but if the white cloth is still used your table will be more interesting if a theme color is repeated Tn several ways on your table If a variation of flowers are used in the centerpiece on a white cloth the result will be more pleas ing if a few white flowers are used to tie in the centerpiece with the cloth 'The speaker continued by explain ing that the china used will determine somewhat the color of the cloth used but most china will go well with several different colors giving a choice of color from which a housewife may choose The housekeeper may go mod ern in setting her table without great expense for white cloths tint easily and well The discrimination between cool' and warm colors was discussed Bright shades of yellow orange and red are good for the breakfast table or the guest luncheon a stimulating color scheme is good while your family will appreciate the effect of more quiet colors after a tbusy morning In the evening the quietest softest most restful colors are pleasing as well as being a kindness to those seated at your table Lavcndar being poor under artificial light is made quite accept able if complimented with yellow The Deliberate Hard Dealing With Children Rohs Them Of the Very Things They Need in Later Life a Medium Must Be ound to Assure Success 0 In a
