The Scottsdale school hosted Arizona Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein, US Airways CEO Doug Parker and Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane as well as musicians and writers for the National Education Association's Read Across America week. Visiting on Monday and Tuesday, participants told middle school students why reading is important to their daily lives. Sendlein, who will start his third year with the Cardinals, graduated from Cocopah and has participated in the event four times.

His mother Carrie Sendlein teaches math at the school. Reading from a book of University of Texas football history, Sendlein told a class of excited seventh-graders that neurologists ask all football players read. "One of the things all of them will tell you, it's important to read and keep your mind going," Sendlein said. "It's important because you want to keep your brain healthy, as healthy as you can." Lane's three children, now adults, all went to Qocopah and read less and less as they got older.
