www.azfda.org J. Daryl Lippincott April 24, 1924 June 19, 2008 OBITUARIES Umbertina Maria Belzil, 89, of 20, 2008. Umbertina was born in Verona, Italy on Dec. 8, 1918. Her exceptional par Margherita Vella and Arnoldo Dalla Chiara raised three beautiful daughters: passed away on June Umbertina, Anita and Elena.

Tina met Andy during WWII and later became a war bride and moved with him to Nashua, NH. She soon became a U.S. citizen. She worked nights and raised and nurtured five children. The family moved to Scottsdale AZ in August 1961.

Tina immediately fell in love with the desert and heat of the sun. She worked many years at Motorola until she retired in 1980. She was very involved with church activities at St Daniel. She was a busy voter registrar supervisor during election years and a diehard Democrat. To maintain her independence she learned to drive at 62.

A very frugal grocery shopper, she was the coupon queen. Tina held many family holidays and celebrations in her home and was by far the best Italian cook--a skill she passed on to her children. She loved vegetable gardening and nurturing her roses. She also loved her cats. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Andre Belzil, and four children: sons Ernie and Arnold Belzil, daughters Delvina Belzil and Anita Groh.

Grandchildren include: Yvette Honack, Peter Belzil, Mandy Cohn and Vanessa Groh. Preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret Cuda. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Daniel The Prophet Church at 10:00 am on Friday, June 27th, Scottsdale, AZ. Our family request donations (in lieu of flowers), be made in her memory to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014-5656. The family would like to extend our thanks and deepest gratitudes to Hospice of the Valley for the love, care and guidance they provided during this time of grief. Elladean Hays Bitter, 89, died June 10, 2008 in Anchorage surrounded by her family. She had suffered a stroke five days earlier.

Elladean, known as Ellie, was born to Roy and Hazel Hays February 1, 1919, in Phoenix, Arizona, during the great flu pandemic. She often remarked on why she had no birth certificate: the hospital did not expect her to survive. Ellie grew up on the Hays Ranch in Peeples Valley. Her ancestor, Boone Hays, Daniel Boone's grandson, drove cattle to California in 1849 and began the family ranching operations which remain in business to this day. Ellie's father moved to Arizona in 1912 to start the Hays Cattle Company.

He thought California was too crowded: "When they started raising white chickens and Jersey cows, it's time to move." As a child and young woman, she worked on the open range ranch and attended class at the one room school house in Peeples Valley, which she successfully fought to preserve in the last years of her life. When her older sister Margaret first went to school, Ellie also packed up her things and headed across the ranch to the one room schoolhouse, only to be sent home each day, as she was too young. Ellie wouldn't take no for an answer and, after escaping home and going to school on her own several times, she was finally allowed to attend permanently. Ellie often shared stories of riding the range around Peeples Valley, proudly laying claim to the fact that she had ridden all of the land you could see for three hundred and sixty degrees. She studied home economics at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1939.

During her time at the University of Arizona, she rode with the U. S. Army Cavalry and was crowned 'Aggie Queen." She was chosen to be tional a member honor of Mortar Board, a nasociety. Ellie married William Edward Bitter on August 5, 1944. Bill was born in 1917 in Anchorage and learned to fly in Alaska.

With the shortage of pilots during World War II, Bill instructed Navy recruits in Holbrook, Arizona where he met Ellie. They honeymooned in the territory of Alaska that year, traveling by Alaska Steamship to Anchorage to meet her in-laws, Catherine and Edward Bitter, and Catherine's mother, Anna Ashton, who had moved from Nome to Anchorage in 1915. There she encountered another breed of Western women Anna, who had run the Banner Train Station outside of Nome during the gold rush, and Catherine, who won the Nome High School dog mushing race on the Bering Sea in 1914. In 1950, Ellie and Bill moved to Anchorage with their children, Catherine, William and Judith. Ellie worked for the Anchorage School District from 1951 to 1964, teaching home economics at Anchorage High School and later at East High School.

She started a boys' cooking class and an early childhood education daycare. Ellie later attended graduate school in early childhood development at Cornell University and Oregon State University. Governor Hickel appointed Ellie to a position with the State Department of Education. In this position, Ellie traveled extensively, interviewing women in remote villages and towns around Alaska and published a study which was a pioneer effort to identify economic opportunities for women in Alaska. Ellie returned to ranching in the early Seventies when she and Bill began splitting their time between Alaska and Arizona.

She established the "Quien Sabe" Outfit, in her words a greasy sack outfit, and remained active in ranching until her death. Ellie and her Quien Sabe Outfit were featured in the "Modern Ranching Women" exhibit at the grand opening of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas in June 2002. Ellie is included in "Hard Twist," Barbara Van Cleve's book on Western ranching women. Ellie was involved in many community organizations throughout her life including the Nature Conservancy, Peeples Valley Yarnell Historical Society, and Wickenburg Cultural Organization. She served as Chairman of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and as President of the Yavapai Cattle Growers Association, which hosted the annual Calf Sale at the Hays Ranch.

She is survived by her daughter Catherine and son-in-law Senator Ted Stevens; son William and daughter-in-law Michelle; daughter Judith Bittner; granddaughters Angie Cagle and Lily Stevens; grandsons Jonathan, Daniel, William, and Nicholas Bittner; great-grandson William Edward Cagle; sister Margaret Rigden; brother John Hays and sister-in-law Mary Hays; nieces Cynthia Rigden, Anna Mary Rigden, Janie Surgent, Becky Rovey; nephews Charles Rigden and Johnny Hays; and many other beloved great nieces, great nephews and other family members. She is preceded in death by her husband William Edward Bitter and parents Roy and Hazel Hays. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Elladean Hays Bitter will be held later this year in Wickenburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, 21 North Frontier Street, Wickenburg, Arizona 85390, (928) 684-2272. Lloyd D.

Interment will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 W. Northern Ave. James Daryl Lippincott, known to his family and many friends as "Dip," died peacefully and surrounded by his family. Professionally, he was known locally, nationally and internationally as a leading real estate expert in brokerage and counseling. Born in Hastings, Nebraska, he lived his first eleven years on the Lippincott farm near Red Cloud, NE.

Many of his forefathers were among the early Nebraska pioneers and homesteaders. During Daryl's first six years of schooling, he attended a rural one-room school with one teacher for all eight grades. Neither the school nor their home on the family farm had indoor plumbing, running water or electricity. In 1935 the family migrated to Southern California to escape the Midwest Dust Bowl. After graduation from Bell High School, in the Los Angeles area, he started UCLA as a freshman in 1941.

He was also a midshipman in the NROTC officer cadet program. After he was commissioned Ensign by the Navy, he was assigned to duty with the Naval Amphibious Forces in the Southwest Pacific war theater. Soon after returning to UCLA to complete his education in 1946, he met BJ, and they were married in February 1948. Dip and BJ have four children: Ann Lippincott (Ned Emerson), Vicki Ruby (Scott), Dee Dee Mittelstaedt (Jan) and Larry Lippincott (Margaret Ann), and eight grand children (Marika, Courtney, Morgan, Molly, Brett, Paige, JD and Billy). He has one surviving brother, Don Lippincott (Joy), who lives in Washington.

He enjoyed a wonderful fatherly relationship with his niece, Lisa Lippincott of Scottsdale, and also with Maria Kaneva of Bulgaria. Starting in 1948, he enjoyed a 36-year career with Coldwell Banker and Company, a highly respected California real estate firm. He was chosen to the firm's first out-of-state office, moving to Phoenix in 1953. The office prospered under his leadership, beginning with the leasing of Park Central, as Phoenix began its phenomenal growth. His office door was always open to anyone wanting his advice, help and counsel.

His motto for success was: GIVE MORE THAN IS EXPECTED OF YOU in all of your relationships personal and business. Prior to retirement in 1984, he was responsible for Coldwell Banker's (now CB Richard Ellis) commercial brokerage activities and offices in the Southwest, Midwest and upper Midwest regions. Over a period of time he served on the board of directors of several Arizona banks, corporations and local charitable organizations. For five years he served as a personal real estate consultant to the Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and represented the BVI government in the negotiations for the acquisition of the Baths, one of the world's natural wonders, to be held in perpetuity as a government park. This was the beginning of his foreign volunteer services in Eastern Europe and SE Asia, since total retirement was not for him.

Soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he helped organize, and became a founding director of, the International Real Property Foundation whose mission was to help the new independent states in the former Eastern Bloc countries transition from state-controlled economies to market-oriented economies. One focus involved the transfer of governmentowned housing and commercial properties into the private ownership sectors by sharing the American experience and providing professional real estate services training. The Foundation was funded through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and had a positive impact on the lives of many people who were deprived of freedoms, such as home ownerships, under Communist rule. Over i a period of ten years and numerous trips to the former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern and Central Europe, he helped organize professional real estate services associations and establish working collaborations with counterpart American associations. His later assignments included SE Asia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Viet Nam.

In 2002 Dip and BJ established a family charitable foundation. One focus of the foundation is to provide financial assistance to students in need of support. Other foundation community programs involve art education, mental health, and scholarships for recovering alcoholics through Crossroads. If the sum of a life is measured by good deeds, Daryl Lippincott lived a fulfilled life. He made an indelible and positive difference in the world, touching many lives in profound ways.

He will be missed. Services will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Crossroads Scholarship Fund, 1845 East Ocotillo Road, Phoenix, AZ. 85016 or to Mayo Clinic Palliative Care Program, 13400 East Shea Scottsdale, AZ. 85259.
