Of purple nn gold. Till the angels shall envy The bliss they behold. Correspondence of State Atlas. THE TWO SEXFS WOMAN SIT-Fit A(E. A Iteply "Prosres." The Other Side of the Question.

Facts and Philosophy. Editor Mo. State Atlas In numlier six of tlw State Atlas, of this year, we find a correspondence headed, "Woman Suffrage. What Docs it Mean The author of that correspondence, Mr Progress, is very correct in stating that "Free Lovers and loose divorced people," who have taken the lead in the Woman Suffrage cause, have made it exceedingly odious. But his prophecy that the enfranchisement of woman wonld he equal the advent of a morn millennium, is we believe, a mere assertion, prompted by fond and noble hopes and wishes, without a single proof for its support.

We acknowledge the noble motives, thoroughly, from which Mr. Progress tries to reason; but we must, at the same time, admit the fact that the best of motives do not prove conclusively by themselves that they are in conformity with the truth, which is eternal in its own nature, and tincontra dictory in itself in its innumerable different utterances, in all philosophical branches as well as on the extensive field of tho most practicable common sense. In order to treat the question before us properly, we must begin at the very foundation, and not at mere superficial appearances of things, by which people so often suffer themselves to be misled And this foundation is psychology, as it is proved by the very lives of both sex es. Nobody can, however, reasonably expect a thorough treatment of this whole question in a single newspaper correspondence wo can only touch some important and leading points on this extensive subject, on which so many good and foolish things have been said and written for as well as against it. The different spheres within which the two different sexes move, or the different situation U103' occupy in general in our civil relations, and more particular in the family circles, are not alotled to them by mere chance or usage, but by their different mental faculties, and hence by their different bodily constitutions.

Who can deny this truth, confirmed by undeniable facts? The two great spiritual faculties of both sexes are, the will faculty and the intellectual faculty. The impulse to any act arises first in the will, the plan of its execution is given by the intellect, and the quality of man's life, of his will and understanding, appears finally in the outward act. With the male sex, the intellect takes the lead in everything. However wilful and obstinate a man may be or appear, he is prompted to such a conduct by his reasonings, and not by an immediate intuition of his will. And with the female sex, the will, feeling, or affections take the lead in everything.

However intellectual a woman may be. all her reasonings are prompted and led by a certain immediate intuition of the will, or a certain coloring of the nature of her affections. This is the reason of the greater constancy of woman. If a woman is good, then she is very good, better than a man ever can become. Cut if she is bad, then she is just as bad as the devil wants her to be.

This fundamental and radical difference of the leading features of the lives of both sexes, characterizes also the literature created by them. And in accordance with the whole affectionate nature of the woman, even ber bodily form is more tender, round, flexible, the very form of love and affection pleading by MISSOURI, and Double Shovel-Plows, Drain Tile, Fire Brick aid Chimney Tops. PaopariTOM. Laboratory 105 107 North Second street St. Louis, Ms. PI er IK To give a correct but abstract view of tl conduct of the life of the whole hu man family, then we might say, the man gives the plan. and the woman gives soul and life to that plan.

The life without a plan or body would dissolve, and the plan or body without life or soul would be powerless or worse than powerless, Both sexes are created for each other, in order to supply each other's wants, and thus to make each other happy. Each sex loves in the other what does not properly belong to its own, but to the other. The woman loves in man power and firmness, either bodily or intellectually, but she surely bates or greatly dislikes an effeminate man. And the man loves in the woman that truly womanly and lovely nature, that affec tionate and tender disposition which softens and swe Hens her conversations, her reasonings, and nil her actions, and which qualities are so thoroughly reflec ted by her whole bodily form and gener al appeal ance. These qualities are all entirely foreign to the man, iut they are necessary for his happiness and welfare, and indispensable for the proper bal anuing of his whole being, and therefore the good man would not heit.ate a single moment to risk his own life in the de fense of one of those fair and lovely beings.

But he surely hates or utterly dislikes an unwomanly woman, or a so called man-woman. A true man would surely not like to marry a woman with a male disposition, or, what would be about the same, a man who merely wears skirts and a bonnet. Such a man woman is only a proper match for a weak-kneed, weak-minded, and cowardly man. The foregoing shows the reason why men become more harsh, cruel, and bar barons after they have been' separated from all female society and influence for some time. It proves also the fact that women have exercised, do and al ways exercise, a much greater influence over men than it is generally admitted or believed.

And this has been done, and is done at present, without the use of the ballot. And, we may properly add, that they would not have been able to exercise their influence so well for the good of the whole human family if they hud tried to do it by means of the ballot. The great power they haye in their quiet home circles, and generally by their quiet but effective conduct, would 1 thrown away by them as soon as they would leave their present field and mode of action, nnd assume the public actions of men. All the charms a noble woman ly-woman has with men, and in which her very power consists, would droop as a sweet flower under an early night frost if we should see Iter assume the burden of public life. It would be unnatural for a true woman.

Mr. Progress, it seems, takes it for granted that all women are good. We believe men and women know equally well that this is a great mistake. And bad women would be the very first to make use of the ballot, while the noble women would turn with disgust from the path that leads to the voting place, and with double zeal exert her noble ifluenee with her family and chil drcn. What can good Mr.

Progress expect from a woman, who, by her un womanly and inhuman conduct, tortured her sickly husband, until he became of an undisposing mind and memory, and then says in such a manner that promis es more evil than good results. "I hope to God I will see the day when women will rote, then I will (The rest I do not wish to put on the paper. The other idea impressed by Mr, Progress, that the human family is going rapidly to destitution, and that it soon will arrive at the worst end of its mad career, unless stopped by the enfran chiscmcnt of women, is also an imagination, contrary to facts. History and statistics prove that the human family is improving, slowly but steadily, and the further we come the fastei it will im prove. But the enfranceishment of wo men would surely not hasten the prog, ress.

To say that a mere outward meas ure can do this betrays surely a poor knowledge of the real cause of progress and improvement in morals or religion We could go further on with our proofs from facts of history and phiios ophy, but time and space compel ns to close.
