By Nat Newell nat.newellindystar.com Cathedral High School receiver Reece Horn came out of his curl route in the team's season opener and saw quarterback Connor Barthel rolling out under pressure, throwing off the timing of the play.

It didn't matter. Horn started shuffling toward the sideline and Barthel knew exactly where to find him. It looks so easy. Almost instinctive. It wasn't.

Four or five days a week, two to three hours a day, Horn and Barthel worked on each pass route this offseason. They worked on the adjustments of those routes. Then they worked on the adjustments to the adjustments of those routes. The hundreds of hours of practice they put in by themselves result in those instantaneous reactions on the field and have helped transform Horn into one of the state's best receivers. "Connor throws the ball on outcuts and comeback routes like you see (the Indianapolis Colts') Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne where the ball's gone before (Horn) turns around, and he's making catches for first downs," said coach Rick Streiff, whose team will play at Arlington at 7 p.m.

Friday. "They know where each other is going to be. If you can get high school kids to do that, that's pretty good. "(Reece) and Connor have chemistry but it has been produced by a lot of hard work." Though Horn provides a good target at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, has great hands and football genes his grandfather is Joe Dezelan, Cathedral's coach from 1944 to 1969 his 30 receptions (second in the state), 503 yards (fourth) and three touchdowns have primarily been a result of the work he's put in. He grew up playing running back and cornerback, tried out for linebacker as a freshman but was returned to corner.

However, his brother, Jonathan, had a successful senior season as a receiver (and led Wabash with 108 receiving yards in its season opener) when Horn was a freshman, and he adopted the position full-time as a sophomore. After a season on the junior varsity, Horn made 18 catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns last year. "Coming back from last year, I wouldn't have expected this much," said Horn, who also took advance training classes three times a week in the summer to improve his speed and works out with his brother. "(But) this past summer (Cathedral) participated in K4 If the Colts' 7-on-7 tournament and (Barthel) knew when I'd break for a route and when I'd have to slow down to find that open area. He just knew where to throw the ball.

"That's when I realized, 'That (work) really paid off Though his statistics haven't caught the eye of many college recruiters Horn listed Miami (Ohio), Western Kentucky and Ohio University as schools that have shown the most interest but none have offered a scholarship he is drawing more attention on the field.
