Sometimes, that means handling a rake. As a member of the national youth service program AmeriCorps, the 2009 graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was wielding one Tuesday to help put a fresh layer of mulch on the playground of the Jordan YMCA in Indianapolis. She and about 100 other AmeriCorps volunteers, family members and alumni spent the day doing service projects at four YMCA of Greater Indianapolis branches, getting them ready for summer. "I'm getting a lot more out of this than I thought I would," Barney said of her AmeriCorps experience. In July, she'll complete a year in the program, which matches needy nonprofits with college grads struggling to find jobs.

Barney plans to reapply: "Great work experience." AmeriCorps, a U.S. government program created in 1993, has 704 Hoosiers on its payroll, assigned to perform work for an estimated 300 organizations statewide. The YMCA service project demonstrates the participants' dedication, said Debbie Pidgeon, director of programs for the state's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. (S 51210 5646103) Lafayette Diocese to get new bishop Lafayette Journal and Courier LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Bishop William Higi of the Diocese of Lafayette will introduce his successor this afternoon at St.

Mary Cathedral. Higi's office said it would not release the name of the new bishop until then. His name is expected to be released earlier today overseas. Higi, who turns 77 on Aug. 29, has been the longest-serving bishop in diocesan history, with nearly 26 years in the position.

Bishops are required to submit their resignations at age 75 but continue to serve until the pope chooses a replacement. The diocese encompasses 24 counties, including Boone, Hamilton and Madison in the Indianapolis area, with 105,000 Catholics. Some local parishioners said Higi's tenure was marked by strong leadership and by the warmth and understanding he conveyed to his flock. "I think Bishop Higi has done a good job, and I don't think there are many things that need to be changed by the new bishop," said Jim Pechin, who attends St. Lawrence on Lafayette's north side.

"It's kind of exciting, in a way, that we get our new bishop, but there's also a little apprehension." "Bishop Higi has always been welcoming and encouraging," said the Rev. Eric Underwood of St. Mary Cathedral. "I hope that (the new bishop) will be a true father to each of his priests; a spiritual father to guide and lead us to be the very best priests we can be." Higi was named bishop after then-Bishop George Fulcher died in January 1984 after a fiery car crash near Rockville. The Rev.

Tim Alkire, pastor of St. Boniface Church in Lafayette, said he is looking forward to working with the new bishop on Catholic education. "I hope the new bishop enjoys meeting the diverse population we have now, especially with all of the Hispanics and immigrants," said Alkire, who is chairman of the board of trustees for Catholic schools. "I hope he will find out what Hoosier hospitality really means." 800-10-120 PURCHASE AGREEMENT FURTRUCK REFURBISHMENTS (S-512A0, 51910 5648104) Carolyn "Sue" Hedrick Brown 67, of Indi- jFji. anapolis r'' it Passe( away EiV "ill on Monday, fflfc -jM May 10, 2010.
