in ARIZONA REPUBLIC VALLEY STATE SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 2008 B7 2 more attacks tied to predator PREDATOR Continued from BI With no forensic evidence to go on, police relied on attack details and suspect descriptions to link the cases. Victims told police the man was Hispanic or Anglo; 20-30 years old; 5 feet, 2 inches to 6 feet tall; 150-250 pounds; with dark, short or spiked hair. Court records show that three victims identified Payan in a photo lineup. One was a 12-year-old girl who was grabbed and sexually abused June 11 in an apartment complex at 22nd and Campbell avenues. Payan has been charged in that case.

Detective Reuben Gonzales, a Phoenix police spokesman, said photo lineups have been completed for all 13 attacks. It was not clear how many victims identified Payan. Phoenix police have so far submitted a total of nine cases to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. A spokesman for the office said that prosecutors are reviewing the material and that additional charges are likely. Police are still investigating some of the incidents.

Tucson hospital seeks help to ID patient Barbara Felix, UMC's coordinator for international-patient services, said his medical bills are not an issue. "We feel that it's very sad that he's not had anyone from the family come forward because this could help him in his recovery," Felix said. Adobe was one of an estimated 50 to 60 illegal immigrants in a pickup truck that rolled near Arizona City on April 27. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office estimated that 20 to 30 people ran away after the crash. Four men died, 18 people were flown to hospitals in Tucson and Phoenix, and an additional nine were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Felix said the man entered UMC with life-threatening injuries and is slowly recovering. The hospital is not legally required to keep Adobe, but he is unable to leave on his own or care for himself, she said. Without a caregiver or insurance to pay for him to receive care in a rehabilitation facility, the hospital continues to care for him, said Katie Riley, a UMC spokeswoman. School is safe, inspectors say HOSPITAL Continued from B1 "He could have left our facility in a matter of days of coming here because we had done what could be done," she said. "He could have been in a rehab facility." Felix, who has been the international-patient coordinator at UMC for 21 years, said this is a "very unusual situation." "Whenever we've had people come to us after automobile accidents, the most common thing is someone shows up looking for them," she said.

"Frequently people will have some kind of identification." Adobe arrived at the hospital with a bag and a Mexican voter-registration card. After weeks of searching, representatives of the Mexican Consulate found the family of the person named on the card and learned he was not that person. "We assumed it was his, which was an error," Felix said. "When (the consulate) finally got ahold of someone who they thought was related, they said, "This is not our relative. None of them have been in an accident.

Leave us The crash victims came from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala, so the hospital has expanded its search to span all those countries. OBITUARIES Felix said knowing what language he understands could help him recover and be identified. Officials don't know whether he speaks Spanish or a native dialect. "He is trying to speak to us," she said. "He is unable to write.

We don't know if that is part of the injury or if he was never able to write." Riley said his initial care likely will be paid by federal Section 1011 funds, which help hospitals cover trauma services for illegal immigrants. Even so, the federal government stops paying for any care provided after the patient is stabilized. Riley wouldn't disclose the cost of his care. UMC receives $1 million to $2 million a year in Section 1011 money to help cover the estimated $5 million to $6 million it spends on illegal immigrants. Riley said the unpaid amount cuts into the hospital's bottom line and can affect hirings and the purchase of new technology.

But Felix said the man's care matters more than money. "He's a man without a country at this point," she said. Anyone who can help identify the man can contact UMC social services at 520-694-6671 or UMC international pa- services at 30, 2008 with all of her family together, in Illinois. "Mac" McBride Mac, 73, died peacefully July 29, 2008, in his Glendale home surrounded by his loving family following a struggle with cancer. He was born in Phoenix on Jan. 25, 1935, the oldest son of D.H. and Wanda McBride.

He spent much of his childhood in northern California during World War Il. There, he learned to appreciate different cuisines and cultures. Mac returned to Phoenix with his family and helped his father run a service station while attending Isaac Elementary. He began his military career at Phoenix Technical High School, where he served as battalion commander of the ROTC, president of Boys' Alliance and was a 'Boys' State delegate. He attended Arizona State College and received a degree from Phoenix College.

At age 18, he joined the Arizona Air National Guard and dedicated 41 years to the service, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. Highly decorated for his work in Germany, Vietnam and Operation Desert Shield, among other missions, Mac earned the respect of his men through his leadership, unfailing support, honesty and integrity. So regarded by those who worked with him and for him, a room was named for him at the Air National Guard shortly before he retired in 1994. During his time in the guard and in retirement, Mac had the building and took air-monitoring samples," said Ward Jacox, an Arizona Department of Health Services official. The next steps include more tests for mold and carbon dioxide.

Dale Walsh, a DHS-hired consultant, said that although further tests must be done, he felt that the district had made many improvements. "I would feel it's safe as any other depending on if you've got allergies," he said. The inspection marked the first time Derrick Denis, an industrial hygienist hired by parents, was allowed into the building. Denis was also concerned about the construction but agreed that i if the area were clean, he would consider it safe for students. That message relieved Corona parent Ben McCawley.

"Since February 27, when all this started, that's what we've wanted," he said. "I'll let my girls go to school." Rosario F. He shared many adventures on land and sea with Barbara, his wife of 53 years. The two of them were partners in every sense of the word, from raising their four girls to balancing the checkbook side by side, they were a team. Mac was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend who made everyone who knew him feel cared for and safe. He often said his greatest accomplishment was his daughters and grandchildren. Tough on the exterior, he would melt around his girls, who he made time for every day.

He gladly gave up his afternoon nap to hear his girls share their adventures. Mac proudly wore his Grumpy T-shirts, but also showed a soft side. He was a loving grandfather who always supported the kids from lifting them "up" high above his shoulders to offering bowling tips to teaching the proper way to set up a Christmas display. An intelligent man, Mac read voraciously and enjoyed tackling jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and daily quiz shows. He loved to bowl with his friends at the Air Guard and took pride in his backyard garden.

He took care of everything from leaky faucets to KC-135 airplanes to his family.
