Victims to confront racial violence REMO SALE April Clearance Significant Reductions Starts Monday 10 April at 10am Oxford Street at Crown Street Darlinghurst Telephone (02) 331 5544 Mr Bayles criticised the police Special Branch as ineffective in dealing with groups responsible for racist attacks. "I don't think they are producing enough results," he said. On March 14 a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a Jewish school in Bondi causing only minor damage. A police spokesman said attacks on Jewish people or centres occured on a sporadic basis. "Since the fire bombing we've had some anti-Jewish slogans painted on a building, but we haven't had any undue problems," said a Bondi police spokesman.

Mr Jerry Levy, president of the Jewish Board of Deputies, said, "We are not at all sure that it is anything but another unsuccessful attempt at school vandalism but one haS to look at the possibility of anti-Semitism. We are most concerned about any manifestation of racism, it is a shame of the whole community." Mr Levy said members of the Jewish community occasionally received "crazy pamphlets" containing Nazi-styled slogans. "We hope that the legislation against racial violence and vilification will help in that respect," he said. Liberal MLC Helen Sham-Ho was about to address a Liberal Party dinner at Ultimo in December when 10 young men, dressed in black, stormed into the room throwing anti-immigration pamphlets and calling out "Death To Sham-Ho" and "shame, Betty Hounslow, of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, said people had received death threats after criticising racist groups. "Police tend to treat each incident as an isolated attack when in fact it is clearly the work of small but organised groups," said Ms Hounslow.

The Human Rights Commission is seeking submissions by May 31 from "silent victims" of racial attacks. "Basically, the terms of reference are for the inquiry to determine the extent of racist violence and whether there's a need for legislation," said Commission spokeswoman Judy Brookman. "We want to hear about incidents ranging from graffiti on walls to physical violence." Submissions can be kept confidential and there will be public hearings. From Page 1 much more clearly linked with violence violence in an attempt to stop people making a stand on these issues." Reverend McMahon believes solidarity is the answer to defeating the racists. "If they are terrorising people because they have land rights stickers on their cars, then all of us should have land rights stickers on our cars," she said.

The fire bombing of a car with a land rights sticker in Glebe recently has prompted Aboriginal leaders to advise supporters to remove such stickers from their property. It is the most serious in a series of such attacks, mostly involving tyre-slashing. "It doesn't really surprise me," said Mr Tiga Bayles, chairman of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. "These people can't attack other people because they are a bunch of gutless wonders, so they attack property which, of course, doesn't retaliate. "I haven't received any personal threats, it is a deliberate strategy to intimidate our supporters among the white community." i YOUR OPINION FILING CABIME Are you aware of an increase in attacks on people and their property if they are known to bold certain beliefs? Would you take a sticker off your carbousebike if you thought it might incite someone to attack you or your property? a I'-y1" 14 Colours i 2 Drawer 3 Drawer 4 Drawer $165 $203 $234 1 tint i Frames Included PHONE FOR DELIVERY Filing Cabinet Trolley $49 BEN SAM WAYS: I haven't heard of that sort of thing going on but I do know some racists.

Yeah, for sure I'd leave it on, you should be allowed to do your own thing, people like that shouldn't be able to affect you. Racism is a totally horrible thing, I can't understand it. PETER MITCHELL: I haven't heard about this sort of thing happening. I wouldn't doubt that it would happen but I haven't seen or heard of it at all. Removing a sticker would depend where I lived and where the car was.

If this sort of thing was liable to happen then I would, I don't stick my neck out, I'm too old for that sort of thing. AMANDA KELLY: I don't know about that sort of violence. Where I live in Erskineville Neighbourhood Watch has been very successful. I'm a bit of a wimp and I'd probably take it off. I don't think one sticker is going to make much of a difference, it would only help if you get a big number of people together.

LYNDA PATCHING: I think this sort of thing has been going on for a long time. A friend who had all of these Aboriginal stickers on his car was bashed up by some Aborigines who didn't think he should be getting involved in their problem. If it the attacks was happening a couple of times a week then I'd do something about it ROBERT MERRITT: I haven't heard anything about it and I don't know anyone it has happened to, but you do hear racist comments all the time, like when you're sitting on a bus and people yell out "wogs" or I would leave it on, people have no right to do that sort ofthingto you.
